You remember Thee Oh Sees from last summer’s run of ear-shaking doubleheadliners with local punk messiahs Eddy Current Supression Ring. The brought and wrought will-breaking choruses and the mythological, perennial American teenage summer to Australian crowds at the Meredith Music Festival and their triumphant pressure-cooker secret show at The Empress Hotel. They ruled our December, and they’re returning for a victory lap.
They’re a elusive beast, touring and releasing at a breakneck pace. Since touring the dirty, underdog-anthemic Help last summer, Thee Oh Sees have released two new full-length albums. Warm Slime is their latest, and it’s a cracker. Thee Oh Sees are inventing their own form. It’s a low-fidelity garage masterpiece. It’s a groaning, grinding culmination of their urgent ungainly rock, prised open and remade. It is opened and defined by the titular track; a pared, refined, invigorated wailer. The album is a dizzying, heavy and dangerous affair. It’s the feeling of death in a desert; like drink-driving a muscle car. The sound is as immense and powerful as it ever was, reverb still monstrous, the drums still heavy and heart-stopping. It is summer music; dirty, hot, long, intoxicating and halfway inebriated.
Since tearing Meredith Music Festival apart, Thee Oh Sees have demolished ears at two iterations of the venerable All Tomorrow’s Parties, label showcase Gonerfest and Primavera Sound. They’re returning with more meat to chew and a few bones to pick, playing a series of shows across the state in support of their Warm Slime and featuring material from their upcoming album, to be recorded in February. See it when it’s here. They’ll always be around, but it’s guaranteed they’ll never be the same.
