Patrick Matthews (Youth Group, The Vines) and Sarah Kelly
(theredsunband) write songs together for The Jewel and
the Falcon. The pair have been good friends for 10 years:
Patrick's younger brother John having been the drummer in
theredsunband.

The genesis of the band came in 2009 when, over the din
of the upstairs jukebox at the Town Hall Hotel in
Sydney's Newtown, Patrick decided to drunkenly bellow to
Sarah a number of half-formed songs he'd been writing
over the previous months. Amused, but not unimpressed,
Sarah offered to help out by lending her talents to begin
a new musical project.

After some debate they named the band after a much-loved
Gaslight Radio song and, in January 2010, they played
their first show at a pizza shop on Enmore Rd. The band's
line up was completed mid-year by the addition of Ben
James (Talons) on drums and Sam Cross on the bass.
