National tour with band includes music from her entire repertoire including songs from ‘Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record’
“Sad and mad tunes reflect life’s bewildering bruising, others are up-tempo and uplifting. Almost sinfully pleasurable.” Qantas Magazine
“Where Rufus' work is fabulously bedazzled, Martha's remains earth-hued and loamy – rich, deep and complex.” Austin Chronicle
Monday 8 November, 2010 – The inimitable Martha Wainwright, with her fiery and breathtaking music is returning to her enthusiastic Australian fans next February 2011. This series of shows will feature the Brooklyn-based chanteuse in a newly conceptualised performance that pulls together songs from her own musical repertoire of several albums and EPs, as well as that of her critically acclaimed tribute to Edith Piaf: ‘Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record’.
As part of a famous musical dynasty (think Loudon Wainwright III, Kate and Anna McGarrigle and Rufus Wainwright), Martha Wainwright was always engulfed in a sea of music from childbirth. But she has cemented her claim as a bona-fide artist in her own right, as Mojo Magazine rightly points out when it says, “This is special, multi-layered stuff. The Wainwright musical dynasty is Godzilla-like, Tokyo will be crushed!”
Further evidence has come from such startlingly good records as her eponymous debut album of confessional, fearless songs. This was followed with a second record (I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too) that was both tender and tough, beautiful and brutal, and simmering with invention and confidence.
Next came Martha’s exquisite live album of rare and acclaimed Edith Piaf songs which Australian audiences can experience in person for the first time on this upcoming tour. Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwright's Piaf Record was warmly received everywhere as a remarkable record that captures a lesser known portion of the French chanteuse’s venerable catalogue, beautifully coupled with Martha’s incredible, evocative and characterful voice.
Make sure you secure your tickets for one of these very special evenings of music. Be enlightened as Martha Wainwright swoops and soars as she performs a selection from her growing musical catalogue, and stamps her own ‘je ne sais quoi’ on Edith Piaf songs, passionately sung and romantically interpreted.
Don’t miss the work of an artist at the top of her game.
