She has collaborated with leading world artists as diverse as Hans Zimmer, Daniel Johns, Ennio Morricone and Russel Crowe.

MOHMED BANGOURA

Mohmed Bangoura was born into a Griot family in Guinea, West Africa. Griots are the traditional oral historians of Africa. It is their hereditary responsibility to tell and re-tell the stories of their ancestors through music, song and dance. Mohmed is described in Guinea as the man with “Hands of Fire”, “the Lion of Matam”, already regarded by many critics as one of the best amongst the Master Drummers of this world. He has dedicated his life entirely to his music and traditions, mesmerizing audiences with his out of this world skills, talent, power and virtuosity.

JACK LADDER

Jack Ladder (real name Tim Rogers) is a singer, songwriter and composer based in The Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. Since 2005 he has released four albums: Not Worth Waiting For, Love is Gone, HURTSVILLE (the last two shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize) and Playmates. Ladder’s distinct baritone voice, well-honed songwriting craft and ability to draw the listener into his narratives, holds audiences to the end. He’ll be backed again by his band The Dreamlanders.

ALON ILSAR featuring Airsticks

Percussionist Alon IIsar creates visually compelling and futuristic music by grabbing, altering and morphing between sounds on his new 3D timbral Theremin, the AirSticks. This gestural electronic drumkit designed by llsar and computer programmer Mark Havryliv also allows the live sampling and manipulation of other live instruments, completely blurring the line between drumming, sound design and dancing. As an improvising drummer llsar “brilliantly comments and reflects on the action”, but as the world’s only AirSticks player he creates “freaky-future sound”.

CHI UDAKA

In 2014 Australia’s premiere taiko ensemble Taikoz and South Indian Classical dance company Lingalayam presented an 80-minute dance theatre work called Chi Udaka at the Sydney Festival. Their performance at TEDxSydney is a snapshot of that work. Entitled ‘Of The Fields’, the scene is set on the afternoon of a hot summer day. The music and choreography partners (and sometimes pits!) dancer against drummer in a display of furiously fleet, fancy foot and stick work. At times delicate and dramatic, ‘Of The Fields’ connects the dynamism of Taikoz’ taiko with Lingalayam’s blend of Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi dance forms.

FRANK YAMMA

Frank Yamma is a well-known Australian musician, instrument maker, composer, musical director and community music facilitator. A traditional Pitjantjatjara man from Australia's central desert, he speaks five languages. An extraordinary songwriter and an exceptional guitarist Frank has been on the stage since he was nine years old. Frank also has an incredible voice, rich, deep and resonant. Regarded by many as one of Australia’s most important Indigenous songwriters, Yamma’s brutally honest tales of alcohol abuse, cultural degradation, respect for the old law and the importance of country are spine tingling.

SANDY EVANS WITH JAMES GREENING AND BOYD

Sandy Evans OAM is an internationally renowned ARIA award winning saxophonist, composer and music researcher with a passion for improvisation and new music. She has played with and written for some of the most important groups in Australian jazz since the early 1980s and has toured extensively in Australia, Europe, Canada and Asia. In 2014 Sandy received her PhD from Macquarie University for research in Carnatic jazz intercultural music, and a Churchill Fellowship to continue her research in India. Her latest CD, ‘Kapture’, a fusion of jazz and Indian music, is a tribute to South African freedom fighter Ahmed Kathrada. In ‘Transcendent Arc’ she is joined by two of Australia’s leading wind players – James Greening, pocket trumpet and trombone, and Boyd, contrabass clarinet – to explore and celebrate the beauty of breath and melody.

Visit tedxsydney.com for more information.

TEDxSydney will take place on Thursday 21 May at the Sydney Opera House.
NEWS ARTS ON THE AU THE AU REVIEW (MUSIC) ALON ILSAR CHI UDAKA FRANK YAMMA JACK LADDER AND THE DREAMLANDERS LISA GERRARD MOHMED BANGOURA SANDY EVANS SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE FESTIVAL NEWS NEWS OF THE ARTS VENUE NEWS INDUSTRY GOSS Fri, 17 Apr 2015 04:02:08 +0000 Andrew Campbell 31180 at http://www.theaureview.com John Curtin Hotel hosts Lent Outta Shape, featuring Lincoln Le Fevre & The Insiders, Rob Muinos, and Georgia Maq http://www.theaureview.com/news/john-curtin-hotel-hosts-lent-outta-shape-featuring-lincoln-le-fevre-the-insiders-rob-muinos-and-georgia-maq

Got plans for this Easter weekend in Melbourne? It's "inspired by the female form and how fabulous that is".

Objektophilie: This is all about "bringing to life the concept of "Objectophilia", which is a German word meaning object sexuality, a "strange, peculiar sexuality being people that fall in love with inanimate objects". "The whole night is based on circles and squares and shapes, massive avant-garde costumes made out of balloons and all these crazy things," the duo tell me.

Mason de Fu: The duo describe this as "a mad house..it's just like the turn of the century avant-garde mad house...with hot kinky nurses pushing around fashion victims in wheelchairs who have chanel drip bags coming out of their arms...stuff like that".

Kiss My Tigerlily: This is a night based all around the famous Tigerlily - one of the residents this season at Pacha. "It's really just getting inside her head", The Squared Division duo laugh, "and her head is full of unicorns, rainbows, cupcakes, pizza, and all that. We've tried to bring that all up and just vomit it out onto Pacha, it's like an explosion of colour".

All this will be kicking off this Saturday January 24th at Pacha. For bookings and more information head to the official Pacha website HERE

The full transcript of our interview with The Squared Division is as follows:

What will the Squared Division be bringing to Pacha?

A lot of sexiness, and a little bit of controversy! Thought provoking acts and artists as well. What we want to do is we want people to walk down the laneway and start feeling the experience from the moment they walk in. We want them to walk out with the full experience, whether that be at 4am or earlier.

We;ve got a larger cast than in previous years, so that allows us to fill this venue constantly.

Are there Any specific themes you have come up with for this season of Pacha?

We want every night to be completely different so for the first 6 months we've come up with four nights of entertainment that are a world away from each other. There's not one night which feels like the other, and they'll be rotating. The first night "Private Parts" is inspired by the female body form and how fabulous that is. The second night is called 'Objectaphilly' - that's a German word for object sexuality which is a strange, peculiar sexuality being people that fall in love with inanimate objects. The whole night is based on circles and squares and shapes. Massive avant garde costumes made out of balloons and crazy things

Our third show is called 'Mason de Fu' which in French means 'mad house' that's like turn of the century avant garde mad house, with hot kinky nurses pushing around fashion victims in wheelchairs with chanel drip bags coming out of their arms and stuff like that.

The fourth one is based entirely around Tigerlily and is us trying to bring her mind out to Pacha. It's really just getting inside her head and her head is full of unicorns, rainbows, cupcakes, pizza, and all that. We've tried to bring that all up and just vomit it out onto Pacha, it's like an explosion of colour.

You guys have been killing it in the U.S. Is there anything you have learnt over there that you have brought over here to Pacha?

I think just the fact that we're so heavily involved in the pop music world and working with pop music. We want every night of Pacha to feel like you're going to see an artist's show. It'd be so themed and streamlined that you will really be like 'this feels like a Katy Perry show' or 'this feels like a Gaga show'. It'll have that familiarity.

Where's your focus going to be on each night?

For the openings for each show our focus will be everywhere. I think in the set up, just making sure everything works exactly how we want it to work. Pacha have a really great team behind them who are doing an awesome job at bringing our visions to life. Once we've created it it's really them who keep it alive.

NEWS THE AU REVIEW (MUSIC) VENUE NEWS Thu, 22 Jan 2015 05:50:41 +0000 Chris Singh 28887 at http://www.theaureview.com The Gasometer announces the 'Collingwood Open'! http://www.theaureview.com/news/the-gasometer-announces-the-collingwood-open

The Gasometer re-opened in May last year. That is hardly the extent of how much they have grown though, just ask any hipster in Sydney's inner-west and they'll tell you that the group's regular block party, One Day Sundays (ODS), has quickly become the quintessential party in Sydney. In fact, ODS has become so popular so much that it has outgrown it's original hosting venue, Marrickville's Vic on the Park Hotel.

As such, One Day Sundays will now be making the very comfy move to The Factory Theatre, a venue which is more able to host the ever-growing block party. As One Day say themselves, they just want to "party with all of ya'll, and we want you to spend less time lining up, and more time turning up". The first One Day Sundays to kick off at their new home will take place on January 25th.

One Day Sundays began in February 2013 with the simple aim of creating a relaxed environment where people could just have a good time hanging out and dancing to tunes by the One Day DJs. Fast forward to now and you have people scrambling to get inside.

The very first One Day Sundays was a combined launch for Spit Syndicate's album Sunday Gentlemen and from there grew to include a rotating cast of guests including P-Money, DJ Izm, Dexter from The Avalanches, and more. Demand eventually pushed One Day to tour the party around Australia and they have now thrown over 30 parties in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, and the parties spiritual home of Sydney.

There's no sign of slowing for One Day, as they have just confirmed dates for a Summer Run of One Days Sundays across Australia, locking in some pretty massive guests for each event.

Raph Dixon of One Day (and Jackie Onassis) had the following to say about the upcoming move while reflecting on his favourite One Day Sunday sessions.

At what point did you realise One Day Sundays was growing to the point where something like this would happen?

The bar lines have been getting pretty long over the last few months, but the last one we had to turn people away as there was a line of 300 people out the front of the venue - thankfully the new venue, The Factory, will be able to accommodate more people and there will be 4 bars - so far less lining up!

What are some of your fondest memories since you guys started One Day Sundays?

Most of my memories of the event are pretty foggy to be honest, although P Money's first set was pretty wild I would have to say. Also Adit letting off a confetti canon when P Money dropped his "Not Many" remix was wild. And having Anthony Albanese come down to party was great.

Have you guys given much thought into how to use the new space?

That's basically the thing we've spent most time on. We're getting a bunch of posters made up and we have commissioned a large scale mural to be done - we'r hoping to get it done in time for the January party and I have to say that The Factory Theatre have been pretty good letting us basically permanently redecorate their venue! We'll also have multiple stages running when the numbers pic up including a small funk/soul/disco chill out room with its own bar and air con for anyone who wants a break.

You guys have been touring the party across Australia, how has that been going?

It just keeps getting bigger and bigger which is great! We just came back from Perth from our biggest event and we're heading to Melbourne this weekend. We never planned on being able to take the party round the country and the first time we did it was going to be a one off, but here we are throwing parties every other weekend - it's wild!

---

One Day Sundays kicks off at The Factory Theatre on Sunday January 25th, featuring One Day DJ's, Nina Las Vegas, and Halfway Crooks, as well as more acts to be announced. Entry is FREE.

The Factory Theatre is located at 105 Victoria Road, Marrickville.

NEWS ONE DAY VENUE NEWS Tue, 13 Jan 2015 03:43:15 +0000 Chris Singh 28770 at http://www.theaureview.com FBi Social to shut doors to make way for new 'Bandroom' - venue to host final party on November 1st! http://www.theaureview.com/news/fbi-social-to-shut-doors-to-make-way-for-new-bandroom-venue-to-host-final-party-on-november-1st

What started as a three month pop up venue, FBi Social wasted no time in becoming a venue bands of all different calibres would perform at. In response to these new laws, which effectively will stunt the growth and continued success of many venues within the city, the Sydney Late Night Culture Alliance was formed. Comprising of key Sydney live music and performance venues, cultural organisations, artists and music industry stakeholders, the alliance has been formed to oppose and fight the new laws which so drastically effect this community.

There is a noticeable opinion which links alcohol-fuelled violence in city streets to live music and performance venues and artists, one that is drastically misguided. The Sydney Late Night Culture Alliance have actively chosen not to include alcohol companies, industry groups associated etc as they believe there is much more to Sydney nightlife than consuming alcohol in any quantity - it is something the AU believes wholeheartedly as well.

The Alliance has formed a petition to 'Keep Sydney Open' and to fight Barry O'Farrell's new legislation, one that as of publication has a staggering 13,001 signatures of a desired 15,000.

To show your support, visit this link:
http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/fight-barry-o-farrell-s-cbd-legisl...

There is also a community forum run by inthemix, happening at the Metro Theatre tonight from 6pm which will be discussing whether or not lockouts are indeed, the answer. There will be a panel of state politicians, local councillors and stakeholders from the late-trading bar and club sector in attendance so if you would like to have your opinion heard, this is the place to do it.

Entry is only available through RSVP, so make sure you visit this link to ensure your attendance!

http://www.inthemix.com.au/competitions/show/4140/inthemix_Community_For...

NEWS VENUE NEWS INDUSTRY GOSS Mon, 03 Feb 2014 04:41:08 +0000 Sosefina Fuamoli 21249 at http://www.theaureview.com Iconic albums revisited on stage at The Long Player Sessions at the Brisbane Powerhouse http://www.theaureview.com/news/iconic-albums-revisited-on-stage-at-the-long-player-sessions

The Long Player Sessions will return to the Brisbane Powerhouse in August. The place has received some major reworks after the German restaurant downstairs was damaged in a fire late last year. Since then, the venue has had to close its doors.

The insides of the venue have had a major overhaul with changes including multiple rooms which including a saloon bar, a 300-capacity bandroom, and a private den (whatever happens in that room is up in the air). A garden balcony designed by vertical garden artist Joost is also prominent, plus a brand new cocktail menu. Of course, most importantly for music fans a new PA and lighting system has been installed.
