With Jona Bechtotl adorned in an all white suit (including suspenders - very tasteful) and Claire Evans in an all black dress, YACHT entered the Oxford Art Factory stage to greet an eager crowd.
“Will we go to heaven or will we go to hell? It’s my understanding that neither are real” sings the duo, starting their set with Ring The Bell. YACHT have the ability to make us carefully examine our surroundings while ultimately questioning our way of life. After the first song, Bechtotl paused to show the audience a few slides they had prepared. These included their home address in Portland, Oregon - the duo urging fans to visit if they’re ever in the area, and to make sure we check out some nice vintage stores on the way. Their slideshows have become an integral part of their live shows and prove to be both entertaining and witty.
They continued their set with I’m in Love with a Ripper in which Evans belts “In our world we are millionaires” while Jona jumps off stage and interacts with the audience. Their set was filled with many impressive slideshows along with dance moves that complemented each other. Summer Song really got the crowd moving, with its infectious synths and handclaps, getting shoulders shaking, and feet shuffling.
There are certain shows which you wish would never end. This was one of them. It was Psychic City (Voodoo City) that was the highlight of the night, containing the highly contagious “ah yi ah yi ah yi ah” - one simply can't help but to sing along.
The night ended with the encore See a Penny Pick It Up, leaving the crowd fulfilled. Their live shows are somewhat magical, with the duo’s raw and energetic personalities transferred into the crowd. It’s always great to see a band in an intimate venue, which this reviewer believes makes the show more cherished and personal to all who were there.
YACHT have taught me to enjoy the finer things in life as well as few new cool dance moves. They are not a cult, however this reviewer wishes they were as there would be no objection in donating large amounts of money to them.
