Despite being a band that clearly takes some queues from fringe culture figure Billy Childish, I can't escape the feeling that Whipped Cream Chargers are set to be the next trendy Sydney thing, crossing into the mainstream and heralding a new era of cravats and waistcoats for all.
Their set of Velvet Underground covers was an impressive coming of age. I heard tell that they only had one rehearsal for this special night - their gear was stuck in an impounded rehearsal room for the weekend. They promised me 'impounded' wasn't a euphemism for 'hocked'. There were some rough edges, but they were tight enough as a band that this just fed a happy chaos. The set had an organic feel that many tributes lack. It was a pleasure to be in the audience. Surprisingly the biggest crowd pleaser was when they slipped in some of their own songs into the set. It's pretty good sign if you can play your originals against some Velvet Underground favourites and not disappoint the punters. It was the most visibly pleased I've ever seen OAF publican Mark Gerber. Time for more gigs I say. If you're curious I recommend checking out their track “Harp of Gold”.
When I caught up with the singer Seb after the show, he was violently vomiting. He said it was the booze and the excitement. I say he was vomiting out the Satan, he had the devil eye and had been gyrating like a man possessed with Nat the tambourine girl. Was good to watch.

They followed from an excellent powers combined set from Trent (Holy Soul) and Luke (Laurels). Congrats to Trent and Holy Soul on the new Album.
