We Say Bamboulee + Ball Park Music + Eagle and the Worm - The Brass Monkey (03.03.11)

The Triple Rainbow Tour, We Say Bamboulee, Ball Park Music and Eagle and the Worm

The Triple Rainbow tour is exactly that; a triple edged blade of sublime happiness and glorious Australian indie fantastico. A double rainbow is good; a Triple Rainbow is better.

Because of that, I headed along to The Brass Monkey in Cronulla to catch We Say Bambouleé, Ball Park Music and Eagle and the Worm on the first stage of their Triple Rainbow Tour. The Triple J sweethearts have been blessed (not undeservingly) with a set of eastcoast dates over the course of March.

First, a note about The Brass Monkey. It's one of the best venues I've had the pleasure of attending - I've been there a number of times over the past couple of months and it's almost perfect. Fantastic food, great service and an awesome atmosphere that's difficult to describe. Combine that with fantastic live music, and you have one of the most incredibly intimate and personal venues in Sydney. If you have the chance, check it out.

Right off the bill were Eagle and the Worm. The Melbourne act have balls and charisma that leaks through into their music which is bright, confident and hyper entertaining. Obvious stand out songs were "Futureman" and "All I Know" but the whole set flowed and bounced from start to finish.

Front man Jarrad Brown used the intimate setting to his advantage. His between-song-banter was generally witty and entertaining, something a lot of bands don't quite succeed at in more personal situations.

Next up were Brisbane's Ball Park Music. I'd been warned about these guys - and I tell you what, I was not prepared. When they finished their set, I was left an exhausted pile of dishevelled clothes. Their set is energetic and crushing at the same time. Front man Sam Cromack redefines the term gyrate every forty seconds and the band as a whole has a simply glorious vibe.

Their set rolled over the crowd and was finished far too quickly for my liking. "Sad Rude Future Dude" was obviously incredible, as was closer "iFly". They also played a couple of new songs, Rich People are Stupidand Helicopters. Both were great, catchy and definite hits in the making. If you needed another reason to come see this tour then Ball Park Music are it.

Up last were Sydney three-piece synth-love band We Say Bambouleé. While they were great, their position following the exhaustingly energetic Ball Park Music and super charismatic Eagle and the Worm made their set seem lacklustre and repetitive. That said, their hits were hitty and their crowd interaction was fantastic - I loved Swingsets and Waiting In Wisconsin. I'd love to see them in a different environment where they had more energy, more time and maybe a little more control.

All in all, the night was fantastic. If the first leg is anything to go by, the rest of the tour will be amazing. Tour dates are available here.
