Making my way to Kings Cross, I was on my way to see a young band out of Perth, Voltaire Twins.
They are a mash up of bands such as Architecture In Helsinki/Muscles/Presets/Art Vs. Science. They have elements of all of this and of course their own special little distinguishable traits that set them apart.
With catchy hooks and songs that get stuck in your head for days, Voltaire Twins released their new Romulus EP at the Fbi Social last Thursday night. With a decent turn out, and quite a few supports that included bands such as Bird Automatic and Swimwear, it was a great little introduction to the Voltaire Twins. Sadly I didn't get the chance to check out the supports due to car troubles (sigh), but make sure you check them out, they are well worth it.
Receiving rave reviews across the country, even managing to sell out their Perth Launch, it was a good opportunity to catch Voltaire Twins before they take over the airwaves.
The band describe themselves as "New Wave Disco Synth-tronic Space Pop". Their line up consisted of synths operated by brother/sister duo Tegan and Jaymes, electronic drums and a live drum-kit. While many of you may knock the fact that this band does sound very similar to a lot of electro music out there, they have boundless enthusiasm when it comes to their stage show and it's a treat to see such a young outfit making some extremely catchy music.
Even though the stage was incredibly cramped and there wasn't much room to manoeuvre, they made the best of it and got the crowd grooving along to their beats. My personal favourite from their set was "Wolves In The Walls", with it's slightly darker undertones and staccato drums, you can't help but be drawn into the soundscapes that many Electro bands these days can't really pull off anymore.
With their perfectly dishevelled hair and Tegan's cute locks, they bopped around playing their tunes with conviction.Truth be told, many would say it's been done before and better, but they had something about their sound that stood out amongst the crowd. It stood out in the way that it reminded me of the days back in the early 2000's , with the ED Banger crew and the australian electro scene that exploded around that time.
When the band decided to play "Animalia" with it's eery call to arms and it's pounding drum/bass line, the crowd burst into life, crooning and swaying along to the tune. With tunes like this, there's' no wonder that they sold out their Perth launch.
With the release of this EP, you get to see the added depth behind this young electronic outfit, which is just really a teaser. Hopefully they'll stick around long enough to put out some more great music in the future. If they continue the way that they are, it's definitely just a matter of time.
