Two Door Cinema Club + Parades - Enmore Theatre (07.02.11)

Having had their debut album, Tourist History, out for almost a year now, Two Door Cinema Club are rapidly becoming one of the world's favourite indie-pop bands, with their infectiously cheerful jams and some of the most addictive choruses I've heard in recent years. May I add, every single song on their fantastic debut is a standout – a rare feat for any band.

Now, as a very anticipated sideshow to their appearances at the Australian legs of St Jermones Laneway festival, the band hit the Enmore Theatre with support from the rapturous Sydney band Parades.

I had never seen Parades live before, and had only heard bits and pieces of their debut album Foreign Tapes, so I had very little basis for any expectations. However, even if my expectations were alarmingly high, this talented band would have exceeded them. I was pleasantly surprised at how refined their sound was; song after song, they stunned this reviewer with beautiful vocal harmonies and some truly intense drumming from the talented Jonathan Boulet. Their atmospheric art rock is comparable to the best parts of Explosions in the Sky and even Sigur Ros – you need to see these guys live, as soon as possible.

As the horde of teenagers continued to grow, Two Door Cinema Club hit the stage with a very stroboscopic light show, beginning their set with album opener "Cigarettes in the Theatre”. The audience immediately went spastic, making it clear that this was going to be one of the loudest sing-a-long concerts I've been to in awhile.

The hits, “Undercover Martyn” and “Something Good Can Work,” made early appearances, causing a thunderous reaction which no doubt made the boys blush. With the energy the crowd gave, the band returned tenfold with flawless performances of all the songs off their debut as well as a brand new track (“Handshake”) and some gems from past EP's.

From open to close, these Irish boys kept the crowd animated and left us begging for more, as they finished with “I Can Talk” and proved that the hype is well-deserved.

Both Parades and Two Door Cinema Club gave such excellent performances to the packed out Enmore that I would be a fool not to consider this an early 2011 highlight.
