The Rapture + Erol Alkan + Strange Talk - Metro Theatre (06.01.11)

Fuzzy has given us a killer line up with this Metro gig headlined by none other than everyone's favourite party band The Rapture. Impressive Victorian band Strange Talk and Mr 'disco 3000' himself Erol Alkan were on support duties but were both given sufficient time to showcase their style, especially Erol, who was given a near-two-hour slot for his DJ set.

Strange Talk was up first, and while I arrived halfway through their set what I heard impressed me enough to be on the lookout for them in the future. Fans of trendy dance-rock bands like Pheonix would without-a-doubt warm up to these guys in a heartbeat. With a live presence that commands attention and catchy singles such as the feel-good disco-ish jam 'Climbing Walls' these guys are going to be a hit.

Next up was the the impeccable party-starting sounds of Erol Alkan. Starting off with some delectable disco dripping with funk Erol tested Metro's sound system and it seemed like the crowd just could not help but move to the rhythmic tracks he expertly mixed. After about an hour of nothing but thumping disco the track he did with Boys Noize – 'Waves' – made a welcome appearance and began the transition to harder electro tunes; The transitions were so smooth and well-done. Even though Erol's popular edit of Justice's 'Waters Of Nazareth' was sorely missed he delivered an awesome DJ set which did well to set up for The Rapture.

I forgot the Metro even had curtains as they closed over the stage to build anticipation for the headline act, as they opened back up The Rapture took to the stage with a humble greeting to the crowd before kicking things off with 'Don Gon Do It.' Seemingly getting all the popular songs from their third album out of the way the boys quickly got into 'Pieces of the People We Love' and the crowd-assisted 'Get Myself Into It' which saw Keyboardist Gabriel Andruzzi busting out the saxophone helping the song to translate perfectly live.

Well-written 'The Devil preceded fan-favourite 'Woo! Alright...' to which the audience screamed the bridge “people don't dance no more...” to make it the highlight of the set closely followed by the epic cowbell-heavy 'House of Jealous Lovers.'

Getting into more of their older punk-ier material they broke out the awesome 'Echoes' before turning things down with the rock-ballad 'Open Up Your Heart' which sadly sounded a bit too grating live – I hate to put anyone into a box, but as far as live goes, The Rapture is at best when they are giving us a party vibe.

They previewed their upcoming fourth album with new single 'Sail Away' which fell a bit flat as well but their live rendition of 'Olio' made up for it as frontman Luke Jenner sang the first verse while walking around the crowd. The house-esque track closed off the main set.

The encore started off with 'No Sex For Ben' which I was a bit disappointed with; The live translation of the song took away the Timbaland-induced bounce that makes the track so endearing and replaced it with a lousy attempt at trying to re-create the beat by the band. This was followed by two new songs that Jenner said have never been performed live before (I guess we're lucky!) and they both sounded great, ending the set on a high note.
