The Potbelleez are one of Australia's most renowned electro/house acts today. Their members include DJs and producers Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic and lead singers Blu and Ilan Kidron.
But before we get into the headline act, lets talk about the amazing variety of homegrown support acts that performed that night. First up to open the night was pop/electro/dance sensation Radio Ink, who played a generous set of songs including "Rocket" and "Wish U Were Here". The energy of the band was contagious and each band member had still maintained their individuality which altogether made the experience a pleasurable one. I must say there was a striking resemblance between the lead singer Sarah Smith and Roxette.
The subsequent act was reggae/R&B act deriving from Lewisham in the UK who loved Australia so much that he decided to move here - Marvin Priest. When I heard him introduce himself to the audience, I joked with someone "he's probably related to (reggae superstar) Maxi Priest!". Only to hear on the radio the other day that he is actually in fact, the son of Maxi Priest!
He sang some familiar tunes which have their fair share of airplay on mainstream radio stations including "Take Me Away" featuring Wynter Gordon and "Own This Club". One was also pleased to see a couple of familiar faces from the Sydney music scene such as Prinnie as his backing singer; and Abraham Rounds on drums, which one saw play with local soul/reggae all-female band The Love Drug.
Both acts played a generous amount of songs to warm up the audience for the headline act The Potbelleez. I've always been a fan of their hit songs and it is one experience to hear them playing on the radio, to actually seeing the faces behind the songs. These guys sure know how to engage a crowd as they jumped around and danced enthusiastically on stage. Although some of the songs were unfamiliar to me, their energy had rubbed off on every one including myself. Even more when they sang their hit singles "Don't Hold Back", "Are You With Me", "Trouble, Trouble", "Hello", "Shake It" and "From The Music".
It was so pleasing to see a diverse range of talented Australian artists perform in outer western suburb of Sydney, Penrith - let alone supporting The Potbelleez.
