Tapping into the essence of true old school Oi/thrash punk, Coffin were loud with breakneck speed songs designed for slam dancing and kicking shins with 15 hole Dr Martin boots! The drummer pulled off some manic facial expressions looking psychotic at times. The four piece ripped through their set announcing they are here to 'make the other bands sound good'. What they did was kick it off with a punch in the face.
There is no way you can fault Melody Black. Musically they are tight. Their sound is heavy, melodic and crisp. The formula seems right but it seemed to lack energy. Whereas Coffin were sloppy but had the crowd entertained.
I went into this with great trepidation. For me The Misfits are not the same without being lead by Glenn Danzig. His voice symbolized what made them so great. In the beginning by fear was realized when they churned out newer material, mostly from the new album "Devils Rain" but when they played "Static Age" I started to turn.
Old tracks like "She", "Where Eagles Dare" and "Hatebreeders" reminded me of why The Misfits are so great. Even if they are now a three piece and considerably older. Jerry Only does his best to replicate the majesty that is The Misfits. When they threw out classics like "Die Die My Darling", "Nike A Go Go", "Death Comes Ripping" and "Hybrid Moments" I forgot that this was a mere reflection of a great band and was taken back to near glory days. The Misfits are icons and influenced a wide audience of bands today and will continue to.
The Misfits still entertained and if I look past my own pre judgement, put on a solid show. Song after song playing nearly 30 tracks in an hour an half and there is no mistaking that look. Big muscles, the devil lock hairstyle and horror corpse paint, the Misfits still represent the goth punk scene they created all those years ago.
