I had mixed emotions for this show,
as I knew it would be the last time I would ever see The Lucksmiths.
Spanning a career over 16 years, 16 wonderful years, they’re saying
goodbye, forever. As I entered the venue, I was greeted by a sea of
friendly and familiar faces who were all excited for the show. The vibe
of the room was filled with excitement and optimism, as well as a little
bit of melancholy.
Joining The Lucksmiths on their farewell
tour is Darren Hanlon. He entered the stage with confidence and
was greeted by a large applause. He opened up with the inevitably catchy
'Electric Skeleton'. He continued on their set with adorable pop songs,
delivered with honesty which clearly showed his true colours.
Waiting for The Lucksmiths to
arrive on stage, I couldn’t help but start to feel nostalgic. I thought
back to the first song I heard, the first CD I bought, and the first
time I saw them live. Finally it was time, singing drummer Tali White
greeted the crowd and set the night off with “Untidy Towns” - filled
with overwhelming rhythm guitars, slick bass lines and impressive drumming.
They continued their set with “The
Music Next Door”, and the infamous memorable chorus. Their ability
to write the most heartfelt and blissful lyrics, without seeming pretentious,
sums up why so many have fallen in love with them over the years.
As Tali White casually chatted to the
audience, creating a fun and happy atmosphere, the night only got better
from here. They continued the set with “Good Light, Broken Bones”,
and the heart warming “Under the Rotunda”. The best thing about
them is their ability to put a smile on your face and there is no other
word to describe how this band will make you feel other than "happy".
Crowd favourites such as “Frisbree” and “Self-preservation”
instantly got the crowd cheering and moving.
After a set of nearly two hours, it
was time for us to say goodbye. They say all good things come to an
end, but for The Lucksmiths, I wish this wasn't the case. It was hard
to find any fault in the bands remarkable set, because after 16 years
they still play every show full of heart.
