You couldn’t have asked for a better line up. Soundwave once again brings to our shores a cast of international superstars.
Walking into an over-packed Manning Bar, there was no sight of the Fucked Up front man on stage, perhaps he was absent? Then noticed a large man down in the pit with a microphone, a strange haircut and yet an amazing core voice. Catching the last few tracks, I was quite surprised to see an early-arriving crowd of punk and hardcore fans be so pumped and ready for what was next to come.
I was quite devastated in missing Polar Bear Club’s tour in 2010, never knowing when I was next going to have the opportunity to catch them live in action. First intentions were that Jimmy Stadt’s (singer) scream was a distinct comparison to the front man of Cancer Bats. Not at all bad, from start to finish PBC fans were very pleasant. Third track in was the kick-start to roaring cheers, 'Boxes' was played out and to finish their set, 'Drifting Thing' and 'Living Saint'. Very excited to see these guys on their next trip out to Oz.
Just when I thought the crowd was already warmed up, H20 brought the house down with their fast punk tracks. Getting right in amongst it all and letting H20 fans have their turn in singing, it was all smiles to see such an amazing band play out a fantastic 30 minute set. H2O came out strong from first track '1995' and then moving on to 'Faster Then The World', with guests from Terror appearing on stage and also his brother screaming to; 'Give Me My Association'. This was certainly an act not to mistreat, perhaps their last visit to Australia mentioned from front man Toby Morse, finishing off the set with killer track 'What Happened'.
I can asure you right now, anyone in this room can leave very pleasant with what’s already been witnessed up until now. Terror were soon to top it off with not just an amazing 1 hour set, but some knowledge and meaningful facts which mistakenly caused a little pain to one Terror fan. Scott Vogel (lead vocals) soon turned this into a real punk hardcore show, stating that “barriers are shit”, telling everyone to get up on stage, pointing out to the side speakers and demanding his fans to jump off them.
Meanwhile, this was meant to play out in a friendly and safe environment, “we’re here to look out for each other and to stay safe”. If you knew the words to any song played out, you were sure to get a microphone in your hands, or for some in the head.
Meanwhile, tracks that got through were 'Betrayer', 'Always The Hard Way' and 'I’ll Follow You To Hell And Back'. This was truly a dedication act to punk/hardcore, to H20 and to people who really loved this genre of music. As crazy as SV was on stage, sculling beers, stage diving and absolutely cutting loose, his message was quite clear.
Finishing off with the single from their latest album, 'Keepers Of The Faith'. Terror left us with these last few words, “It don’t matter whether your wearing a Bring Me The Horizon shirt or even a Madball shirt, just keep this underground shit going. This world is fucked and all we have is music.”
