The evening got off to a start with Sydney’s latest indie pop sensation Cuthbert and The Nightwalkers. With a mixture of male/female vocals, guitar, drum, bass and a whole lot of keyboards this delightful seven piece played their hearts out. They were an entertaining and lively support, receiving a well deserved applause at the end.
Finally the curtains opened up and the girl who everyone came to see: SoKo finally came on stage, accompanied by her backing band. From the second you see SoKo and hear her talk, there is only one word to describe it: adorable. Grabbing her baby blue electric guitar, she opened up with See You Later Alligator.
Her song "I Wanna Look Like A Tiger" is a fast pace, fun and energetic song about, well, wanting to look like a tiger. With her cute little tiger outfit she started screaming “Life’s a bitch” and “I wanna look like a tiger” getting the audience moving and bopping along.
With no set list, she asked the audience what they wanted to hear, from being alone to sing a longs. Trading instruments back and forth with her band she played favorites including Shitty Day and a very serious song about Peanut Butter. SoKo is certainly full of life engaging the crowd in conversations and making many witty remarks such as “Sorry I don‘t speak Australian” getting scores of laughs.
She continued her set with "I Never Meant To Hurt You" a song about a boy breaking her heart. Getting a special guest on stage (that’s right it was Mark the Cobrasnake) she played her delightful song about kittens which had the whole audience making meowing sounds.
“So, of course you were meant to call me tonight” set the room off like a bomb, with her hit "I’ll kill her". Everyone in the audience sung along with her and for a split second, we shared her pain.
Playing for nearly two hours she finished the set off with "I’ll Never Love You More". It certainly was a spectacular night, and performing for us in a small and intimate venue was certainly a great way to end the year.
