The Big Top has always been one of my favourite music venues and not just because of Coney Island next door. Some of the best memories I have as a kid happened right here. The time I won a toy gun from putting those white balls into the clown's mouth (those things still freak me out) and the time I spewed from the carousel and my mother bought me an ice cream to make me feel better. Those were simpler times, am I right? Feeling enough nostalgia for one night I entered the venue and headed upstairs to the bar I was greeted by a sea of familiar and friendly faces.
New Zealand electro rock band Kids of 88 opened the proceedings of the night to a packed out venue with their cliched hipster adaptation of dance music. The band's set was energetic and fun to watch especially during "My House", where the continuous assault of beats and handclaps was truly a standout. The band however failed to impressive the crowd, who merely just stood still with their arms crossed throughout the whole set.
The atmosphere of the night was phenomenal - the night just had a great vibe to it, something that rarely occurs for me. Finally American pop band Scissor Sisters graced the stage with their magnificent presence, and they looked utterly stunning along with their two backup singers. Lead singer Jake Shears wore a see-through black mesh shirt, leather jacket and ripped jeans while female lead vocalist Ana Matronic wore a dazzling blue dress.
It didn’t take long for the group to captivate the crowd as they launched into "Night Work", with Shears' provocative dancing and singing creating sexual fury among the audience, and they loved it. However it was lead guitarist Del Marquis who caught my attention for most of the night. The way he moves on stage is so graceful that it’s outright mesmerising. Yes, he is my new man-crush.
Highlights of the night included "She’s My Man", "Take Your Mama" and "I Don’t Feel Like Dancin'", which ironically got the entire venue dancing, with shirts and bras coming off and everyone was having the time of their lives. During the encore both Shears and Matronic changed outfits into something so bizarre it nearly blew my mind worse than the film Inception. They ended their set with "Filthy/Gorgeous" and left the crowd satisfied, pleased and more importantly happy.
Overall it was a wild, fun and dynamic set and I can’t wait to see them again.
