Announcing their break up in December last year, it was sad that today would be the last Sydney show for Brisbane punk rock band The Gifthorse. After initially hearing the news I was surprised, sad and angry; however I decided to make the best of it, as they followed through with an impressive and passionate set that included their new single From The Floor Up and North In-exposure. As their set came to an end, there was a deep sense of melancholy, as Australia would be losing one of its greatest punk rock bands.
Perth hardcore legends Break Even got the audience moving with front man Mark Bawden continually inviting kids up on stage. What ensued were massive waves of stage dives and high fives. Great success! The quartet delivered a brutal set of riffs and breathtaking vocals from October 27th, Heart Shaped House, The Truth and November 18th.
Chasing Hamburg by American post hardcore/indie band Polar Bear Club is one of the most prolific albums released last year. With their first tour to Australia, they wasted no time in proving that they’re NOT just another over-hyped band but in fact a driving force within the music scene. They played with enthusiasm and passion, alternating songs between their two albums and a few songs from their EP. Highlights of the night included Living Saints, Burned Out In a Jar and Light of the Local Eyes.
Polar Bear Club are a band not to be forgotten, and not to be missed. They dare to challenge, push boundaries and go that extra mile, putting their heart and soul into every performance - regardless of whether they’re playing in front of 50 people or a 1000.
