Expectations are high when promoters open up a new club. Especially one at famed Home nightclub ‘replacing’ the much-loved Sublime (or rather, forcing it to move to another spot in the building). The main part of Home nightclub is now invaded by ‘Oh My!’ on Friday nights. Is it worth the $25 cover charge? Yes.
Everyone loves Home nightclub as a venue (and if they don’t it’s probably due to some sort of bias) but the usual crowd and atmosphere of Sublime on Friday nights wasn’t for everyone.
Now ‘Oh My!’ has a very different vibe to it - that of a typical electro/house club but more back when you used to love electro/house clubs without superfluous amounts of cheesy tracks-you-just-heard-on-the-radio. The track selection by all the DJ’s in the main room was superb and everything a fan of that type of music would want to hear on a night out.
The star attraction for the night was guest DJ Kavinsky (of SebastiAn & Kavinsky) guiding us through his excellent set. A few moments that lacked in regards to mixing but barely noticeable and negated by the crowd-pleasing track selection consisting of Mr Oizo (Gay Dentists), The Kills (Cheap & Cheerful [SebastiAn Remix]), Boys Noize (Lava Lava) and other floor fillers.
Also, if you get a bit sick of the main room you can take a stroll up the stairs and pick another room with another entirely different atmosphere. The smaller room hosts dub step and hip-hop whilst the room with the smoking area seemed to be home to disco and indie tunes (when I entered they were playing The Human League!).
That’s three different atmospheres to choose from! The promoters for ‘Oh My!’ are definitely doing something right, and with big name guests such as Kavinsky and Peaches popping in for a spin, this night is well worth the expensive cover charge.
