As a sideshow to their scheduled Big Day Out appearances, Indie darlings Matt & Kim have decided to grace our shores once again for their unique brand of feel-good indie pop. Steadily increasing in popularity since their second album Grand, this infectiously happy couple have been brought out to showcase their new (and old) material to an excited Beck's Bar audience.
Not to be out-staged, energetic pop-punk band TheDeathSet took to the stage first. With their loud, intrepid sound demanding attention from the beginning to end, the band did a fine job to please fans of their music - but I remained underwhelmed.
The write-ups on these guys usually describe them as a cross-genre and progressive pop-punk band who like to incorporate everything popular from hip-hop to electronica into their music. I did hear tiny hints of various styles here and there, like the bassline from Dr Dre's classic "Deep Cover", but I really struggled to see these guys as anything more than a derivative pop-punk band, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you are a huge fan of hard, fast-paced pop-punk then this band probably would have gotten over well with you – they just didn't with me.
A short break later and the familiar sounds of Terror Squad's "Lean Back" mixed with a sample of Biggie yelling 'where Brooklyn at?' over and over again introduced the stars of the night as Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino made a loud entrance, making it clear that we were about to witness a spectacle.
"I Wanna" off the aforementioned Grand served as an introduction to the set and translated brilliantly live, with the couple attacking their instruments on stage with an utmost passion, whilst Matt demonstrated his modest vocal skills.
What added to their brilliance were the live mash-ups they skillfully glided into their songs; the earliest being an awesome rendition of Jerry Lordan's infamous "Apache" which was interpolated into their song "Good Ol' Fashioned Nightmare". Covers of DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat" and Alice DeeJay's "Better Off Alone", amongst others, were scattered throughout the joyous set, but it was Matt & Kim's original material that was the most endearing, particularly hits "Yeah Yeah" and "Daylight" which sent the whole floor into a frenzy.
With great music and random on-stage antics (such as Kim dancing on top of the crowd to Major Lazer), this fun-loving indie couple from Brooklyn are indeed one of the best party bands in music right now. They are absolutely a must-see live act.
