Live Review & Photo Gallery: CSS + Romy - Oxford Arts Factory (24.01.2011)

Walking in to a somewhat uncrowded room at Oxford Arts Factory, the support band was on. Romy, a songstress from Melbourne (with a head of hair some lions would envy_ didn't let the fact that it was a Monday night worry her one bit. Romy and her band, featuring the drummer from The Fumes, tried their very best to get the hesitant audience in the mood to party with CSS.

They struggled to do this at the beginning, as with most support acts, but by the last 3 or 4 songs of their set, they had a decent amount of people standing closer to the stage and moving to their poppy synth sounds. Tracks to look out for: 'Rapunzel', 'The Audience' & 'Teach me How to Sleep'. Romy and her band left the stage to a loving applause from the now rapidly growing audience, who were anticipating the fun times ahead when CSS hit the spotlight.

The room filled up, the front row was squishy to say the least, everyone wanted a piece of frontlady Lovefoxxx, and no question as to why. She came out, glass of wine in hand and proceeded to yell "Let's start this motherfucking thing!" much to the crowds delight. The set began with some old tracks including personal favourites "Music is my hot, hot sex", and "Off the hook".

These ones had this Monday night party well and truly on its way, and pumping people up for the Big Day(s) Out which were to follow. This Brazilian 6 piece sure know how to get a party started, and how to keep the fun times rolling, not once during the set was there a ‘lull’ or disappointing moment. Each member played their own special part in making this one very fun show. But it was clear that it was Lovefoxxx who had the Oxford Art Factory in the palm of her hands, owning the stage with a cheeky confidence and light-hearted character.

The second half of set saw some newer songs, showcasing a somewhat different sound to their earlier work. The audience were lucky to get a sneak peak of some new tracks while CSS are in the country. I’m sure we are all now looking forward to a new CSS record and to see exactly the direction they will take.

There were really no faults, or anything bad to write about this show. It was most definitely a solid set, by a solid, extremely charismatic and entertaining band. Anyone seeing them at the Big Day’s Out around the country won’t be disappointed.
