Little Red - Take 40 Live Lounge (31.03.11)

Having just been in the US as part of their appearance at SXSW 2011, Melbourne band Little Red played a very intimate gig at the Take 40 Live Lounge on Thursday night. The mini red carpet, security guards, camera men, photographers and VIP lanyards gave the event a more exclusive feel (mind you, I had come straight from work and was dodging the lights). The crowd was packed into the “lounge” and seeing all the TV equipment and camera men in essence heightened the anticipation of the band gracing the small cluttered vintage look stage.

Adrian Beltrame (sporting a very blonde crop of hair) led the band on stage to an enthusiastic crowd clapping and the fan girls at the front with the usual “Woo !” The set started out with “Little Bit of Something” which motioned the crowd to sway along which was followed up by “Get a Life” - clearly a favourite with the crowd as more and more began to sing along. They played a few more hits off their latest album Midnight Remember – "Lazy Boy", "Place Called Love", "All Mine" (the ballad off the album, which was an appropriate song for the couple trying to make up in front of me) and "Slow Motion". Beltrame then announced that he had a surprise – a cover of Jackie Wilson’s 60s smash hit “Higher & Higher” and for a relatively youthful crowd, most knew the lyrics well enough to thrash their hands together in the air, sing and sway as much as they could in the given space.

Finally, the song everyone was waiting for and probably the sole purpose for turning up to the gig… “Rock it” which got everybody singing, head nodding, dancing and clapping along to the #2 Triple J Hottest 100 hit. Mid song – Beltrame hopped off the stage to join the crowd in bellowing the chorus and some serious arm swinging. Officially, "Rock It" was the final song for the Take 40 Live Lounge recorded session but the Melbourne boys still feeding off the audience’s energy played a few more hits to end the night including a cover of Joan Jett’s "Bad Reputation".

Little Red is the band to listen to when you want to feel like it is summer again and just get lost in their happy melodies. Their album Midnight Remember is out now. You can catch this recorded session of Little Red @ the Take 40 Live Lounge on Channel 10 17th April at 11.30am.
