Appearing in Australia as part of the Laneway Festival, American dubbed ‘New wave’ band Hockey played an intimate sideshow at Oxford Art Factory. Arriving on stage front man Benjamin Grubin greeted the crowd with a friendly hello and charming smile.
They started their set with Work moving onto Learn to Lose getting the audience dancing and singing along. Wanna Be Black is a song written back when Ben was growing up and the highlight of the night with electric drum beats and heavy bass lines along with lyrics ‘When I was young I just wanted to be black’.
Playing a new song named Get Married Late an indie dance pop anthem that succeeded where Vampire Weekend failed. Their set was entertaining and addicting with Song Away and Too Fake getting the most reactions from the audience, and ending their set with the encore Preacher.
Hockey’s set was entertaining, energetic and exciting and if you’re going to Laneway I recommend you check them out as you won’t be disappointed.
