I originally was expecting Moshpit Comedy tonight. Instead, I got a couple of great performances that didn’t produce any laughs, but did produce a good night of music. Sadly, I missed the name of the first act, who was a solo acoustic performer, displaying some great songs and a true indie/folk voice.
Second act was Phebe Starr. She had a voice that crossed between Adele and Gwen Stefani. Her indie pop songs were sweet and pleasant, and her band added depth to her tracks. Throwing in a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain”, it was a great little set from a girl with huge talent.
Frankie & The Heartstrings hail from England, and added this show as a part of their tour for the Sydney Fringe. They had a '80s new wave sound that had elements of The Cure, Joy Division and later Buzzcocks. The enigmatic front man spent most of the show off the stage, singing down on the floor in front of the seated crowd. A couple of hipsters joined him in dancing, and I swear for a moment it felt like 1982. Their songs were quite good, and while I was never a big new wave fan, these guys were entertaining, and that's all you can ask for from any show.
Yeah, there was no comedy, but there were some cool tunes and a nice evening spent at the Gaelic.
