Echo and the Bunnymen - Metro Theatre (02.02.10)

The relaxed feel of the Metro made it feel like we were waiting for a much less known band, maybe a cover band, something with a clever name at the local. Exactly like a pub gig, a pub gig with Echo and the Bunnymen. Much of the audience had been fans long enough to see them when they would have been playing pubs. This low key vibe shifted when the Bunnyman came on to stage, full of presence and skinny jeaned. Much baggier, singer Ian McCulloch looked incongruent in his mirror shades, more like he was from Oasis. You can probably forgive him for dressing like a Gallager, seeing as Oasis were probably dressing like him.

An element of the pub vibe snuck back when they broke into Rescue, like it had come on the jukebox, the room was a karaoke chorus. It didn't matter what the band did for the devoted audience. I'm sure many walked away having seen the best show of their lives. Outside of that bubble it was a bit of a precious and effected set -Already wearing sunglasses, and with less light on stage than on the audience, McCulloch continually asked the lighting guy to turn down the lights -it was like a Monty Python skit. The exit sign and the neon bar light were brighter than the blue backfill on the stage. He was still talking about the lights when Killing Moon had started. He noticeably relaxed when he had a cigarette in his hand. Think he lagged a bar in killing moon to take an extra drag. The story circulating is that the Bunnymen almost missed their laneway gig and had to reschedule their sidewhow because the singer missed his flight. Maybe he had to have one last smoke before the flight and didn't quite make his call, maybe the light was too bright that day.

The premadonna front man stuff aside,  Killing moon, Cutter, and Rescue were the biggest pleasers. Cutter being my favourite of the set. It really was a great song to hear live. The good moments were very good. The band was tight and clearly pleased to be playing. One of the guitarists skipped back onto stage for the encore. During the encore there was an interlude cover of "Walk on the Wildeside" irritatingly he middleoftheroaded it, changing the line 'giving head' to 'turning heads'. This irritated the shit out of me. clearly. maybe it was an accident. or maybe he's a massive tool.

Cutter was really good. If you're a huge fan go see them, you wont be disappointed. Otherwise buy one of their records, they have many good ones.
