Killer feat. Does it Offend You, Yeah? - Metro Theatre (11.09.09)

Kato is no stranger to the Sydney dance scene, and was up first to play a nice selection of tracks - ranging from House to Electro. Surprisingly, he managed to fill the dance floor and warmed the crowd up well for The Yacht Club DJ’s.

The Yacht Club DJ’s have come a long way in the last 2 years, playing big name festivals such as Meredith and the upcoming Parklife, alongside supporting international artists from Girl Talk to Lady GaGa. Their sets are always diverse and Friday night was no exception, with the DJ's showcasing their best known remixes, from The Lion King to Klaxons. Don't miss the chance to catch them live if they roll into your town.

Ajax followed and quickly took the stage, continuing the momentum with his own remixes. However, after two hours of continuous dancing, the crowd had become tired and restless. There was nothing exciting about this set, the songs dragged on for too long and the bass was way too heavy even for this type of show.

It wasn’t until Does It Offend You, Yeah? walked onto stage that the crowd returned to life with a massive cheer. It’s been nearly a year since I’ve seen these electro thrash wizards and I’ve been dying to experience their live show again ever since. It was clear as Rushent entered the stage, he was already intoxicated and continued to sing while holding a beer in one hand... classy.

They exploded into their set with "With a Heavy Heart (I Regret to Inform You)", which absolutely destroyed the dance floor, the crowd jumping in sync to the repetitive and hypnotic drum beats delivered perfectly by Rob Bloomfield. This writer must also give praise to bassist Chloe Duveaux, not only is she an amazing bassist but her presence on stage perfectly accentuated the band’s performance.

They continued on their set with "Doomed Now" and a new song "Heart Attack" which was performed quite well, considering, as Rushent proclaimed, they’ve only played it 3 to 4 times live. By now, I found myself right in the middle of the pit, surrounded by sweat, tears, and blood, and was enjoying every second of it. Up next was "Battle Royale" which in this writer’s opinion was the highlight of the night.

They continued their set with another new song "The Monkeys Are Coming", an insane electro beat in-your-face-thrash-punk mix with smooth bass lines and intense drumming which assaulted everyone’s aural senses.

After 7 songs, the band had left the stage. Rushent returned with a new shirt which bared the slogan “FUCK OFF”. He then dedicated this next song and quote “To people who want to fuck shit up” to which "Attack of The 60ft Lesbian Octopus" ensured.

However, the night took a turn for the worse when Rushent decided to let 30 drunk girls on stage to do a karaoke performance of "Let’s Make Out". It was perhaps one of the most awful performances I have witnessed this year. To think people payed $55 to watch this nonsense. From here on in the bands set became quite atrocious; with a terrible revision of "Dawn of the Dead", which the crowd didn’t seem too thrilled about.

For their final song I was hoping to hear Epic Last Song, however it was "We Are Rockstars" to which the band ended the night. This is the second time they have failed to perform Epic Last Song, and I can't help but feel disappointed, quite cheated even. With only a handful of songs in their arsenal, it would be obvious to play one of their most popular songs. Bad move on their part.

While the night began well enough, things became a bit unpleasant towards the end. But despite this, Does It Offend You, Yeah? still put on an amazing show and fans should think no less of them for the way things ended.
