It’s funny to think that under two years ago DLC could only half-fill the Annandale - yet here we are at the second of two sold out shows. The band (in particular, Kim, the singer) have come a long way since then and it was good to see them in fine form.
But first to the support band…
I had heard good things about Jericco and I was keen to see how these boys would play. The answer is, very well. This 5-piece are a heavy yet very melodic band that has obviously been influenced by Tool and Karnivool. Although they’re not near the level of those bands, they delivered a tight and enjoyable set.
As the screen came down in front of the stage, the crowd edged forward in anticipation. It seems that while Dead Letter Circus have been holed up in the studio recording, their fan base has been growing larger and more fervent. They kicked off the set with "This Life Awake" before plowing straight into "Disconnect and Apply" and "Are We Closer". The break from playing live seems to have done the boys good, as they were more excited and energetic than I have seen them for a long time.
The remainder of their set consisted of DLC staples such as "The Mile", "Reaction", "Alien" and "Lines". Now don’t get me wrong, I love all those songs; in fact I love every song they’ve put out. But like many people I met on the night, I have seen them well over 10 times. And the set list is getting, well…. a little old. Even though they tried to spice up some of the intros, I had seen those versions before too. There was only one new song thrown into the mix ("Here We Divide"), which was a little disappointing considering they have been writing new material for well over a year and apparently have a new album in the can.
Song choice aside, it was a great gig from a band that never fails to impress. I’m just very grateful that next time they tour, I’ll have their new album in my hand and a bunch of fresh (and no doubt amazing) songs to sing along to.
