Dead Letter Circus + Black Devil Yard Boss + The Evening Son - Metro Theatre (03.09.10)

Excitement was in the air on entering the much loved venue, the Metro Theatre on this fine September night. It’s the first time Dead Letter Circus have headlined the Metro, but they are hot on the heels of bands such as Karnivool and The Butterfly Effect.

The Evening Son were a welcome surprise, a band who have previously supported the likes of Mammal and Gyroscope. The fast building crowd were happy they made the effort arriving early for this band. Not for the faint hearted, a track named ‘We are the majority such our thumbs’ was first up, and with a good response from the room, The Evening Son continued with ‘Open’, then a new song ‘All aboard the boat wherever’. A couple more songs in and the crowd thickened for the finale from The Evening Son, ‘I Am’. Overall, a perfect set from this up and coming rock band, if you like the raw sounding music of Tool and the Stone Temple Pilots, check out this band.

With two members from the much loved but recently separated Mammal, Black Devil Yard Boss had some very anticipating fans waiting to hear what this band had to offer. Sounds like B sides from a Pearl Jam record, was the first thing that came to mind, and the fact that the bassist’s singlet could not possibly get any tighter. They did well for a three piece but lacked energy on stage and to be honest could have hired a singer, Pete Williamson has the Dave Grohl look, but unfortunately not the voice. He wasn’t terrible, but was way cooler when he focused on playing guitar only. However, I think fans of Mammal down the front were just as happy to be seeing Pete and Zane back on stage.

Dead Letter Circus were welcomed to the stage with a pretty massive uproar from this sold out metro crowd. It has been my delight to see this band come far enough to sell out the Metro theatre, and they do deserve it. Always a solid act, however tonight DLC seemed a little uninterested by the crowd that were clearly showing a truckload of interest in them. DLC scooped out hits ‘Big’ and ‘One Step’ and various others from the latest album, including personal favourite and one of their more electronically inspired tracks ‘Cage’.  Plenty were singing along and jumping around and loving life during older tracks, ‘Reaction’ and ‘Next In Line’, however highlights of the set were ‘Space On The Wall’ and encore ‘Lines’. Pretty sure the crowd, including myself, left satisfied, yet wondering could it have been better? We’ll have to wait and see on the next tour.
