Local DJ’s WOW opened the night with their ferocious dance remixes from Smashing Pumpkins to Klaxons. Up next was the duo DZ playing their brand of garage electro rock. A majority of the audience seemed disinterested in the band which was a shame as they put on a terrific show.
Crystal Castles have ruined concerts for me. I’m scared I will never experience something as frenzied and passionate as this live show. The crowd exploded as Crystal Castles arrived on stage surrounded by a mist of smoke. Multi instrumentalist Ethan Kath and their live drummer entered on stage playing the first intense beats of the night before vocalist Alice Glass emerged from the darkness getting the audience rowdy with her chaotic and distorted screams.
Seeing them at Oxford Art factory a few years back I knew what to expect from a Crystal Castles show; Sweat, blood, tears and bruises, therefore making it an AA show was a bad idea. Playing their electro-8 bit-punk rock hits such as “Untrust Us” and “Magic Spells” got the entire dance floor moving to the steady powerful beats provided by Ethan Kath. Vocalist Alice Glass jumped into the pit several times which was dominated by males, unleashing her extreme and zealous shrieks, stabbing everyone’s eardrums. My ears have never experienced anything as brutal and exciting as that.
The popular “Alice Practice” emerged thunderously from the speakers, Alice jumped into the pit once more accompanied by the brilliant lighting which gave her an ethereal appearance making the crowd go absolutely, for one of the better words ‘bat shit’, thus resulting as the highlight of the night.
Playing only a short set of less than an hour, it was one of the dirtiest, sweatiest and most unbelievable live performances I have ever witnessed. Crystal Castles have ruined concerts for me and I eagerly await their return.
