Splendour Sideshow Live Review: Cold War Kids + Cabins - Metro Theatre, Sydney (29.07.13)

With Splendour In The Grass over for another year, the sideshow tours continue and the latest cab off the rank were U.S indie darlings Cold War Kids. From all reports, they were amazing at SITG and tonight, feeding off the energy from the festival, the band delivered a near faultless set of classic Cold War Kids tunes featuring many fan favourites including 'Hang Me Up To Dry', 'Avalanche In B' and 'Something Is Not Right With Me'.

The band members criss-crossed and weaved around each other with genuine enthusiasm for the music with each member seemingly lost in their own world as they danced around the stage. Stage banter was kept to a bare minimum as the band let the power of the songs dominate proceedings and with a back catalogue as impressive as Cold War Kids four albums, why wouldn't you? I was surprised that the new record Miss Lonely Hearts and Mine Is Yours got a limited number of tracks as the band focused on their critically acclaimed early material. However the soft balladeering 'Tuxedo' was warmly received as a good chance for loved up couple to slowly sway along in each others arms. 'Miracle Mile' proves how good these guys are at writing a catchy pop song and 'Royal Blue' was slowed down half a step and giving an added groove compared to the original recording.

It barely felt like 75 minutes had passed before the band walked off the house lights went up. The sold out Metro crowd proving how popular Cold War Kids are in Australia. The show opened up with Cabins with their sleazy blues back beat and swirling echoed guitars. This is music cheap bourbon makes. Sow paced, murky sounding. It suits a dank back room dive bar yet Cabins were equally at home on the Metro's stage.

At times they displayed some real pop sensibilities and ended their set with a bombastic blast of distorted noise to impress the swelling crowd.their cover of 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon' typifies Cabins sound and what they are all about.

Splendour sideshow week has kicked off with a great start and it's only Monday! There's plenty more to come!
