Bullet For My Valentine - Hordern Pavilion (10.9.10)

Before I start this review I’d like to give a big shout out to the Subway at Moore Park, keep up the great work and thanks for those free cookies! After destroying my foot long chicken fillet sub I made my way to venue.

The only reason I attended this show was to see Bring Me The Horizon, I wasn’t interested in the other bands playing. However, after witnessing Cancer Bats I punched myself in the face for dismissing them in the first place. The Canadian hardcore punk quartet started with "Dead Wrong" and I was blown away. The intensity of their live shows is unfathomable, words are not enough to describe the thousands of emotions that ran through me that night. The only disappointing aspect was that their set was too short.

By now the entire venue was packed, and with two beers in my hand I was ready for the ruckus. After watching Bring Me The Horizon’s new song "It Never Ends" on Youtube a few weeks ago I have been fervently waiting to see them live again. They opened their set with "It Never Ends" and thus began the frenzy of youth swarming up to the front in the hopes of being able to touch Oliver Sykes. "It Never Ends" is even
more impressive live and you can only begin to imagine what their next album will sound like. Their set was mostly comprised of songs off Suicide Season with "Diamonds aren’t Forever" receiving the biggest sing a long: “We will never sleep cause sleep is for the weak and we will never rest until we’re all fucking dead”.

Their set was ferocious and passionate and it was one of the best live shows I’ve seen all year. They ended the night with "Chelsea Smile" which was the perfect end to an amazing set.

Bullet For My Valentine’s set seemed to finish before it even began. From the riff of "Your Betrayal" to the encore of "Hand of Blood" it finished in the blink of an eye. The last time I saw Bullet For My Valentine was around two years ago when they supported Avenged Sevenfold here at the Hordern. I was about eight drinks deep by now and decided to go into the pit with my friends during "Tears Don’t Fall" and started singing at the top of my lungs - "your tears don't fall, they crash around me". I truly felt young again, as it brought back nostalgic feelings. The production of their set was impressive as the lighting technicians really did a fantastic job creating the perfect atmosphere with powerful but not overdone lights.

It wasn’t until the song finished that I knew I had just made a terrible mistake. Beer and subway were expelled from my mouth onto the floor. Luckily "4 Words (To Choke Upon)" was next song and the people around me didn’t notice. Leaving the pit I headed straight for the bar and bought two Smirnoff blacks, because that’s how this reviewer rolls. They continued their set with "Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow".

"The Last Fight" and "Say Goodnight" were the highlights of Bullet's performance as it demonstrated their talent as one of the greatest metal bands of our time. Overall, the set was diverse with the band playing songs from all their catalogues, and it was impossible to leave feeling disappointed.
