Birds of Tokyo + Midnight Youth - Enmore Theatre (5.6.2010)

Having never been let down by Birds of Tokyo before, as I arrived at the Enmore Theatre, I was filled with anticipation for what the band were about to present to me. Firstly however, I was met with Midnight Youth who originate from New Zealand but recently relocated to Sydney (so we can now claim them as Aussies). Operating a very pop-rock sound, they clearly had a fan base at the show, with fans knowing the words to their more popular songs such as 'The Letter' and 'All On Our Own'. Overall, a far from disappointing set from Midnight Youth.

Birds of Tokyo opened their set with their latest single 'The Saddest Thing I Know' which being down the front for, I realised the commitment of BoT fans, as almost every person knew the words already. If the rest of the upcoming album has this kind of reception, it's sure to be a hit.

The rest of the set saw songs pulled mostly from their second & most recent LP Universes, including 'An Ode to Death', 'Armour for Liars' & 'Train Wrecks'. 'White Witch', one of the bands more upbeat tracks, had the entire crowd clapping, jumping and dancing and I was particularly impressed with that part of the set. One thing I have to mention is the genius of the BoT lighting technician, I am always impressed with their lighting but this particular show was insanely good and the lighting genius definitely added to the energetic vibe of the gig.

Thrown into the set were 3 new songs being performed for the first time on this tour. In my experience, new songs are often a somewhat 'dead' part of the set, a time to go to the bathroom, or the bar. Not this time. Birds of Tokyo fans were blown away, no-one moved an inch. Keep an ear out for the tracks 'Circles', 'Wild at Heart' and 'Valley' from their upcoming album to be released late July.

The show ended with a bang with the song 'Silhoettic', but BoT are well known for their encores, and not disappointing fans they did return to the stage for a two song encore. Playing 'Off Kilter' and 'Broken Bones', the room was filled with energy and anyone would have thought the Enmore had turned into the Birds of Tokyo choir. This is one band who are full of class and I will definitely be returning for the album tour later this year.
