Angelas Dish + Here Come The Birds + In This Defence + The Sculptures - The Wall (24.09.10)

Live At The Wall was an event and venue I had not yet experienced until Friday night. I was in for the long haul, arriving before the first support act was even set up. The Sculptures eventually took to the stage, having never heard of this band before, I was impressed to see two chicks, one singing and one on bass. Any rock band with two chicks in it must be good! Having only been a band for two years, it seems they are still finding their individual sound, which I felt was exercised in the track "Special One", however some of the other tracks were very Paramore-ish and just reminded me of other bands with female vocalists. Not that that's a bad thing, but I would like to hear some more individual sounds from The Sculptures. Hailing from Sydney's inner west, it seemed these guys had the most fans of all bands on the night. Be it friends or not, they had the crowd dancing.

Next was another local Sydney band, In This Defence. Mentioning during the set they only brought three friends along (unlike The Sculptures), they had a tougher crowd to impress, but they did have me tapping my feet. A track called "Undead" was a favourite for me. The band never lost motivation throughout their set, always moving around, and the singer even singing the whole last song rocking out from the floor. I look forward to hearing more from this band.

Here Come The Birds had made the trip from Newcastle to support tonight. By this stage I was kind of dreading another support act and just wanted the headline to come on, but I was blown away when Here Come The Birds played their first song. They exercised pretty and poppy guitar riffs in tracks like "Fallen" as well as rocking drumming in heavier tracks like "Rats" and "Bravery and Defeat". Here Come The Birds were the highlight of the night.

It seemed Angelas Dish were burdened from the beginning, with out-of-tune guitars and dusty vocals. Having never seen them before I have nothing to compare it to, however I was told it wasn't one of their best shows. They started off with two new tracks from their forthcoming album, followed by an older one, "On A Sign", which I admit having a good sing-a-long to. Next was their latest single "The Rapture" - I think its their best track, and this resonated on the night. Throughout their show AD didn't seem overly excited or motivated to be there. The set included mostly new tracks and ended with personal favourite "Soft November". Overall a good night of live music, a little bit of an anti-climax for the headline, but I would still be happy to head on to the next Angelas Dish show. Hopefully they can instil a better impression on me next time!
