2 Live Crew + Kato + DJ Leon Smith - The Gaelic Theatre (03.01.11)

As far as explicit party anthems over fun Miami bass music, you cannot pass 2 Live Crew in terms of popularity and quality. Back when they released the mega-popular As Nasty As They Wanna Be, and were subsequently 'banned' in the U.S.A, the group were bouncing between political messages (mostly to do with free speech) and the most explicit lyrics heard in rap (rivaled only by the legendary Too Short). After two decades of wrecking havoc the most recognisable members of the group (minus Uncle Luther Campbell), Fresh Kid Ice and the off-the-wall Brother Marquis have embarked on a long-overdue tour of Australia, and at the Gaelic Theatre I knew I was in for one hell of a party.

However, in order for one hell of a party, you need a hell of a lot of people – this just wasn't happening. I was quite surprised by how few people showed up for the concert but I don't think promotion was too wide-spread, and with the late change of venue I wouldn't be surprised if some people rocked up to The Forum disappointed.

Kato and DJ Leon Smith had support duties for the first two-and-a-half hours of the show and they both did their best to entertain the very spread-out patrons. Kato's set really deserved to be witnessed by many more people as he quickly took us all the way to Miami with an awesome set of old Miami bass records, proving that he is one of the most versatile party DJs in Sydney. Leon Smith, who I'd easily turn to if I needed a DJ for a 'crunk' party, proved to be one of the only urban DJs in Sydney who knows what they're doing when it comes to commercial rap, giving us some awesome dirty south music, the occasional classic west-coast anthem, some classic Too Short and even some Akinyele which fit well with the explicit theme of the night. He gets major props for playing no T-Pain, no Fat Man Scoop – none of that bullshit that makes me dread support DJ's for hip-hop gigs.

As the handful of patrons huddled towards the front of the stage the host of the night tried his hardest to get us in the mood for 2 Live Crew but only met with little response. The crowd seemed impatient and edgy as Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis hit the stage with the latter providing some comedy, buying a Guru T-Shirt off a fan and joking about short-changing him.

The two members started off with some new material off their upcoming comeback album before giving us what we want with an early rendition of "Fuck Shop" followed by some more new material which unfortunately seemed to lack the energy of earlier 2 Live tracks, but it's unfair to expect more from the aged rappers.

All the hits were included in this set from "Shake A Lil' Something", to "We Want Some Pussy", to "Pop That Pussy", to the infamous "Me So Horny" - any 2 Live fan would have loved this, and for a group who is a shell of their former selves they gave a good performance, in fact the only disappointment was that Uncle Luke wasn't there to perform his hits "Scarred", and "I Wanna Rock".

The group was honored at last years 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' show and it's a damn shame that Australian music consumers didn't show similar enthusiasm for the infamous hip-hop group.
