LIVE REVIEWS

Live Review: LeSuits + Tin Can Radio + The Kamikazi Thunderkats + The Worriers - The Zoo, Brisbane (20.01.12)

The four bands tonight have two things in common. Lots of brass and lots of hair. For their EP launch, LeSuits brought together a line up of stellar bands for a show that was more than a little weirdly, awesomely crazy.

Live Review: Sui Zhen + Rainbow Chan + Carry Nation - The Grace Darling, Melbourne (19.01.12)

Sitting down cross legged at a gig is really weird, especially in a pub. I know there are those experimental gigs in warehouses where sitting crossed legged down is a pre-requisite, but why sit on beer soaked carpet? Regardless, I like hanging out with people who like to chill, and I can try to chill, at least in my own gangly way. So I go to the bar and pour water for myself in a small little cup and sit down with most of the crowd before my leg falls asleep and nearly kills me via pins and needles.

Live Review: Asa + Féfé - Space Theatre, Adelaide (18.01.12)

For the Adelaide Festival Centre to bring some brilliant local and international artists through to play over their summer Sessions series this year, it’s meant that there’s been shows going down in this town with that eclectic flair that one would only expect to see at the height of our festival season. A good introduction to the sorts of bands and solo artists Adelaide will be playing host to during the Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival, Sessions has really been a treat to track the progress of.

Washington by Benjamin Portas Launch - Mart Gallery (19.01.12)

The MART Gallery in Surry Hills is a little white room, tucked away amongst many residential and commercial buildings along Commonwealth Street. However on Thursday night, it was positively bustling.

Sydney Festival Live Review: iOTA: Young, Hard and Solo - Sydney Opera Playhouse (18.01.12)

The hit of last year's Sydney Festival, Smoke and Mirrors, was a wonderful production helmed by Sydney talent iOTA. Bouncing off the success of La Clique in previous years, as well as iOTA's growing popularity thanks to his turn in sell out seasons of Hedwig and the Angry Itch and Rocky Horror, it became one of the most talked about event in years.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Mike Patton's Mondo Cane + Anthony Pateras - State Theatre (17.01.12)

Mike Patton needs no introduction. His history with bands like Faith No More and Mr Bungle has virtually made him a household name. His other projects such as Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom have further secured his reputation as an uncompromising, twisted and true pioneering genius.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Julianna Barwick - Spiegeltent (15.01.12)

American songstress Julianna Barwick is by no means a typical female singer songwriter. Rather, her spine-tingling, arrestingly beautiful compositions have an otherworldly quality to them – made even more spectacular when performed live. The Famous Spiegeltent served as the perfect venue for the musician, enhancing the magical ambience that her music evokes. Playing to a full venue, Barwick had her audience transfixed from start to finish.

Live Review: Montpelier + Charlie Mayfair + Kate & Max - The Zoo, Brisbane (14.01.2012)

It’s always a sad day when a band decides it’s time to call it quits, and for the band Montpelier, it’s quite sad indeed. Although they are not the most well known group in Brisbane, they do have a loyal little band of followers, and I won’t lie, I am one of them. I’ve been with them for most of their two and a half year stint, going to the majority of their Brisbane gigs.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Sons and Daughters + Songs + The Laurels - Keystone Festival Bar (13.01.12)

Bringing together a lineup of three immensely talented and engaging bands at Keystone Festival Bar, Sydney Festival provided punters with a wonderful night of music. Starting out with the astounding psychedelic rock of Sydney’s very own The Laurels and ending with the thrilling, pounding set played by Scotland’s much loved band Sons and Daughters, the night cannot be faulted.
