For the first time ever, Cockatoo Island played host to the Underbelly Arts Festival and the largest collection of art school students Sydney has seen since Chris Cunningham played the Opera House for Vivid Festival.
Utilising the unique surrounds of the Island, the festival thrived in creativity. From performances to projections, laser installations to music performances, there was a little bit of everything at the event... that's if you knew where to look. For every event or installation you managed to see, there was another you missed or were unable to gain access to.
Some performances would only take 4 people at a time, and this meant that not everyone who attended the sold out event would have had the opportunity to experience it. This resulted in some disappointed punters. Though it's possible they would have been disappointed had they spent a bit of time researching ahead of time. But who was to know that the event would be like this? I certainly didn't and was among the many who missed out on many of the events and performances on offering. I normally go to these events without much research, hoping to be surprised by what I experience as a result. Rookie mistake? Maybe...
But that said, I still saw so many amazing works, and participated in so many enthralling performances, that I can't help but be content in the knowledge that I enjoyed a great day out on the beautiful island... I'll just make sure I'm more prepared next time around! As there were too many great events to talk about, I'll leave it to Johnny Au to deliver some amazing photos from the day. Pay particular attention to the shots from the All You Can Stand Buffet... this was quite fun. - Larry Heath
