The Kings Cross Hotel hosted one of the hottest nights of live music all week in an optimistic showcase of what Sydney has to offer at Fbi Social nights.
The Ghosts opened the night with their thumping sound. Immediately they rivalled the two floors of loud dance music below them and won outright. Their energy wasn't contained to the room, they were just as wild and unpredictable as their sound.
Next up we were treated to the refreshing band March of the Real Fly. Straight away this band was likeable. Their songs were driven by a ukulele ( and it's about time we get a ukulele as a full-time inclusion in a rock band), and vocals came from the drummer. Despite having his body constantly twisted to play his kit, the vocals didn't suffer. A cover of “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash commanded the attention of the entire room half-way through their set, and as a testament to their appeal, they kept that attention for the remainder. They were energised and rich and the band were smiling throughout. It was a reminder that they were having just as much as fun creating their sound as the audience was having listening to it. They were songs you would be happy to hear on your radio on a sunny-Summer day. Seeing as how we're heading into that season, I'd have no objections to it becoming 'the season of The Fly'.
The haunting echoes of Guerre then took the stage. A one man orchestra, Guerre flooded the entire room with his powerful and mellow soundscape. It entranced and completely overwhelmed your thoughts and natural head space. It resembled Thom Yorke's vocals from newer Radiohead material, only with a more intense stomping spirit that complemented his elongated, echoed approach to his sung syllables.
The strong rock presence was supplied by The Paper Scissors as they closed out the night. Few faults were noticeable as this somewhat veteran band tore through a set that wasn't bound with deep layers of synths, as some of their tracks are on the albums, but relied heavily on their rock ability. And successful it was. They were tight and the distortion of guitars and bass created a menacing environment that entertained the packed venue.
All in all, it was a fantastic display of what's to offer at your local venue. You don't need to spend the big bucks to get the big entertainment.
