A SHORT REVIEW OF THE SHOW:
Just the other day, a friend and I were re-living the 'glory' days of the 90s, where our misspent youth was played out in various pubs, watching all manner of our local peers (and some not so local) belt out their best in their flannel clad grandeur whilst we consumed our cheap beers, nodding heads in time and even swooned!
"What happened to that?!" I begged of my friend....
We both agreed that there was a time where every guy (and some girls cool enough too...) we knew were playing in some band or other... and it was great! So wasn't I surprised when I happened upon Aplonea at their album launch last Friday night.
Not only did they come with their best flannel on... but they also brought an honest rock sound that was heavy enough for the boys to get their heads bobbing and fast and poppy enough for the ample female patronage to dance their way around the stage.
While most of their songs followed a tried and true rock formula, songs such as 'Mornings' showed a greater sophistication with sections of it sounding like it had perhaps had a 'Doves' influence ... with a layered trance quality. I left with a optimistic sense that perhaps all was not lost... perhaps this new wave of guitar brandishing youths will carry the flag... a flannelet flag at that.
