Photo Gallery + Live Review: Beirut, The Hi Fi Brisbane (12.01.2012)

Over the space of an hour and ten minutes, Beirut have The Hi-Fi crowd eating out of the palm of their hand. With a setlist that surprisingly leans more on older releases such as Gulag Orkestar ("Carousels", "The Gulag Orkestar", "Scenic World", "After The Curtain", "Postcards From Italy" and "Elephant Gun") and The Flying Club Cup ("A Sunday Smile", "Cherbourg", "The Penalty" and of course, "Nantes") for a tour promoting late-2011 album The Rip Tide. The first Rip Tide song is "East Harlem" which appears a little under halfway into the set, but it receives no more or less an enthusiastic reaction than the older material.

The only complaint about the night would be that for some reason, artists that require a good sound system keep choosing The Hi-Fi. For much of the night, member Jeremy Barnes' accordion accompaniments simply disappear into the aether, and singer-songwriter Zach Condon's lyrics move from overpowering to muted within a single song. Sound issues aside, 'twas a brilliant performance by a brilliant band.
