Photo Gallery and Live Review: Opeth - The Tivoli (15.12.11)

The black shirt brigade was out in force last night for prog-metal band Opeth. Blasting through the majority of their new opus Heritage in a two hour set, the band also brought out some old favourites by way of 'Closure' from Damnation and 'A Fair Judgement' from Deliverance.

While I've always been skeptical of the boundary-jumping metal subgenres, it's undeniable that Opeth are exceptionally talented. Lead guitarist Fredrik Åkesson switches between electric and acoustic instruments with ease, bringing a grace to metal that I've never seen before; all the while lead singer Mikael Åkerfeldt swans through the lyrics.

The later half of the set is performed acoustically, ending with a fantastic performance of 'Hex Omega' from 2008's Watershed. There's a short pause before the band returns for an encore of the epic apex of Heritage, 'Folklore'. The night was an energetic experience from the well respected musicians, seemingly enjoyed by the all of the (sweaty) black shirt brigade at the Tivoli.
