A quiet summer night in Sydney was the perfect excuse to get out and catch some tunes at the famous Vanguard in Sydney. The sounds started early with Dr Kong and the Stem Cells hitting the stage just after 8pm. It was obvious early on that the many gathered would be treated to a very special night.
Dr Kong produced a set worthy of a headline act I will be surprised if we don’t see a lot more of these guys. Their funkdified sounds had the Vanguard dancing up a storm and the good times were rolling. The only problem was that the stage at the intimate theatre had trouble containing the 7-piece band!
Next up was Charlie and the Maddox Factory and they took a step back in pace but produced a measured set that pleased most. Charlie’s quirky and at times odd folk pop was interesting to say the least.
Just after 10pm, headliners Nimeo hit the stage and by this time the sold out venue was swelling and sweaty. The French Australian band quickly tore into their set and made sure that we all got up for a groove. Their unique swinging rock sounds hit the spot and you could tell that these guys are a seasoned, hard working band.
Their timing and infectious hooks are undeniable and it is a sound that would have even the most resistant dancer hit the floor for a boogie. The band who have just returned from France where they played their latest release Lamnesie are continuing on some dates around the country. It’s a testament to them that they are able to keep the band going as they have 2 members who live in France and 2 who live here in Oz. A must see, highly entertaining band that will put a smile on your face. One to watch.
