Mojo’s in North Fremantle is known for attracting some of the best in Australian Musical talent and the night it played host to Blue Lucy and
Having never heard Blue Lucy before I was very curious to hear the barefooted trio of folk popsters and their brand of acoustic magic (yes I am skipping to the end here and spoiling the story)
With Madie Drew and Charlie Jones providing guitar and vocals, Blue Lucy feels like the love-child of Casey Chambers and Goodnight Tiger(who saucily appear to have had a one night stand with Macy Gray somewhere along the way). Throw Krista Low in on cello and you have this deliciously lush sound that draws you in and holds you captivated, unable to tear your ears away for even a moment lest you miss the magic that these three very talented women create.
Do yourselves a favour and go check then out at a venue with taste near you.

Next up was one of Australia’s most talented singer/songwriters, Israel Cannan who thankfully made the trip across the Nullarbor to share his talent and his passion with a very lucky Freo audience.
I have been a fan of Cannan’s ever since I first heard is album “Walk” and must admit to dancing 7½ jigs when I found out his national tour included his first gig in Perth.
Having left his band at home, we were to be treated to a solo performance which if you have seen the size of the Mojo’s stage could be considered by most to be very brave indeed.
Brave he may be, but insanely talented he definitely is and with g’day guys, thanks for having me, Cannan pulled out all the stops to give the audience something they wouldn’t soon forget.
To hear his voice on one of his albums, you can’t help but be impressed, but to experience live, the tour de force that is Israel Cannan, is something else altogether. He is such an engaging individual who is so passionate about what he does and in the sharing his gift with others, that you cant help but be infected with Cannanitis.
To be able to get the crowd to clap continuously through two whole songs is something that takes not only direction from the performer but desire from the crowd and he had every person in Mojo’s clapping and singing along like one giant symbiotic organism, moving with the beat of the music and feeding off the incredible energy radiating from the stage.
From one song to the next, Israel continued to ply his craft with such skill and enthusiasm that each new number became an instant favourite.
On My Way was truly beautiful and Blue left me utterly speechless.
Cannan takes you on a journey, one which I wished would never end, he switches things up and changes tempo, creating interest and participation and taking you on ye ole rollercoaster of a ride.
To round the evening off, Israel played the most goose pimply version of Let It Rain which had me sitting there praying to whatever god would listen that time would rewind and let me have that moment over and over again.
An incredible night and if you ever get the chance, make sure you don’t miss out on the beautiful spirit that is Israel Cannan.
