Photo Gallery and Live Review: Gemma Ray + Melodie Nelson - The Vanguard (20.12.11)

Unfortunately we missed the always phenomenal Steve Smyth, but luckily Melodie Nelson was still playing as we arrived at the Vanguard. Melodie is a phenomenal talent whose debut album Meditations On The Sun is a favourite here at the AU. Playing many tracks of the record, Melodie impressed with a tight set. I highly recommend checking her out.

The night's main attraction was UK artist Gemma Ray, who has embarked on a rather extensive tour of Australia of late, supporting the likes of Nick Cave and accompanied by collaborator Andy Zammit on drums and a keyboardist. She is a fine talent and an amazing guitarist whose songs are as varied as her assortment of guitar pedals.

She jammed out tracks from her covers record It's a Shame About Gemma Ray and gave us some tantalising sneak peaks into her upcoming record Island Fire. We also got a taste of the rest of her back catalogue which includes solid albums like Hard Shoulder and The Leader. She will next appear at Peats Ridge - which kicks off in a couple of hours - don't miss her!
