Pearls were unleashing a spectacular wall of noise when I entered the venue. Unfortunately this happened to be the last few minutes of the set so I don't have much I can say. But I certainly enjoyed the short experience I did have with them. Catcall then jammed out the tunes in a DJ set as we awaited the main attraction.
Brous (pronounced "Bruce") is a unique Melbourne based talent whose voice feels as though it could have existed in any decade, perhaps in any James Bond theme song. She has that powerful voice leaning towards the deep but capable of reaching notes on both sides of the spectrum, with a 60s or 70s musical aesthetic. Tonight was the launch of her debut self-titled EP, off which you'll find single "Streamers", a track which was particularly exciting live - with one of the more layered compositions you'll find in her repertoire. The set ended with "On The Causeway".
Brous (aka Sophie Brous) has a lot going for her, and if the packed out supportive room tonight was any indication, things are already very much going her way. Much like the female artists who have inspire her, Brous' sound is universal and timeless. I can't wait to see where she goes, Brous is one of the most fascinating Australian musicians I've heard in some time. - Larry Heath
