Tonight was a night of variety, starting with Over-Reactor, an unlikely mixture of vocalist from Mammal and drummer from Dukes of Windsor, followed by ShockOne, a drum and bass DJ, finalised by headliner Karnivool, Australia's prog-rock champs. Something for everyone?
Over-Reactor took the stage to quite a good turn out for the first support. Having seen vocalist Ezekial Ox front Mammal many times previously, I was very interested to see this new project. Ox is definitely not shy, and he showcased his frontman abilities to the maximum tonight; he had to work extra hard to compensate for there only being the two of them on stage. Guitars and synths were all done by drummer Cory Blight (somewhat of an all-rounder), however, he chose to do the live drumming, so the rest was pre-recorded and played. It would have been nice to see a four-piece, but I have to say these two did very well to keep the audience engaged. Ox was out in the crowd, standing on bar stools, where he performed over half the set. Tracks "Nu Metal Motherfuckers" and "The Gangbangers" showcased some crude lyrics and Over-Reactor's unique brand of death-hop, which they explain to be a blend of hip-hop, hardcore punk, and metal. Overall, a decent set, and I'll be interested to see these guys again in a few months.
ShockOne wheeled out his decks and began almost straight away. A change of pace to a what I'd call an expected Karnivool support. Much of the audience overlooked this act and used ShockOne's set time as an opportunity to grab drinks and get some air. Not my thing, but not a bad change of pace, and a break from heavy guitars. Something I would have danced to with a few more alcoholic beverages...
Karnivool made their way onto the stage to a thunderous applause and an excited Magnums audience, and opened their set with "Goliath" - singer Ian Kenny captivates the room from the moment he is on stage. Second up was my personal favourite, "Simple Boy", from their epic second album, Sound Awake. Each song, from start to finish, showcases the various band members' expertise in their instrument.
Throughout the set, we were treated to a good balance of both newer and old tracks, including "New Day" and "Set Fire To The Hive" being the former, and "Roquefort" and "Themata" being the latter. Fans ears also welcomed two new tracks in the set, named "The Refusal" and "Sky Machine", presenting hope for a new album. However, there was a somewhat "last tour" feel to this show, with the band proclaiming that they didn't know if they could write another album, and at times thanking their fans who have been loyal from their beginnings.
Let's hope their only tour for 2011 isn't their last one ever, they blew away the Magnums audience tonight and finished the show with the epic 12 minute "Change" (Part 1 & 2). A satisfied crowd left, eager for the first shows back in 2012 (fingers crossed).
