Tijuana Cartel embark on national "Psychedelicatessen" tour

The boys from Tijuana Cartel are back with a new album, and a tour to support it over the coming months. Citing broad influences as the inspiration for their new direction, they've moulded a pool of eclectic influences into an album they're describing as 'Gonzo'. They've veered sharply off the road yet again, but they've never really been heading in one direction.

Digging deep into Australian counter-culture, Tijuana Cartel brought back a layered, wobbly, colourful gem. The ultimate influence of the album came from Russell Guy. Russell authored a Gonzo radio play/rant broadcast on Double J in ’78 about a psychedelic road trip from Brisbane to Sydney called ‘What’s Rangoon to you is Grafton to me’. A quintessentially Australian gonzo rant it's something that stuck with Paul George for years, the album stands as somewhat of a tribute.

You start to get an idea of what it'll sound like looking at their comment on Russell: “He was this edgy, gonzo hippie from my adolescent imagination so I didn’t know quite what to expect or what approach to take.”

The stress was unnecessary cause Psychedelicatessen does it for Russell Guy who still lays on the rant hard: “Songs like Kelly’s Existential Dilemma, Leaving London, Lost My Head, Spend Your Money and Black Magic Superstar chart a course to a place we’ve yet to imagine...This new album pings on cruise control as it translates, engages and navigates the worldwide plague of earthquakes, terrorism, crime, corruption, scoffers, mockers, volcanic eruptions and psycho-babble, while segueing into a groove that the Gobble-up Machine can’t follow.”

A record heavy on vocals, “It’s a new direction for Carey (Sullivan) and me,” says Paul, “but our audience knows us pretty well by now and they’re used to sudden changes of direction. It keeps us fresh and keeps the music fresh, too."

We'll leave the last word to Russell Guy and his seminal play: 'Where was I and when was it? Where have all the dingos gone? One-Adam-Twelve, We have an herbal freak in progress. I drove off the page and never saw myself again.'
