The Sound Summit 2011 festival program grows

This year, Sound Summit returns to Newcastle with a 4 day program exploring the best in emerging, experimental and cutting edge ideas around music and it’s many facets.

Sound Summit is proud to announce an expanded musical program, headlined by three innovative and fearless bands. Headlining the Cambridge Sound Summit Showcase on Friday Sept 30th is Moon Duo (USA), featuring Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada who formed in San Francisco in 2006. Influenced by Suicide, Royal Trux and Silver Apples, Moon Duo pit space against form to create a hypnotizing sound experience.

Saturday night features Wet Hair (USA), hailing from Iowa City and releasing on their legendary label Night People, Wet Hair is analog-heavy, tape scuzziness at it’s finest. Sound Summit is particularly excited to present an exhibition of Night People and Wet Hair frontman Shawn Reed’s handcrafted album and cassette artwork, which will be on display at Emma Soup’s gallery for the duration of the festival.

MONO (JPN) are a band that hardly need introduction, this iconic Japanese art-metal band have been blurring the boundaries between noise and neo-classical. Hailing from Tokyo, they have established themselves as the leading voice of epic majestic noise. MONO headline the Sunday night showcase at the Cambridge Hotel.

Sound Summit is also set to include some incredible local bands from across the country, including Fabulous Diamonds (VIC), Collarbones (SA/NSW), the legendary Scattered Order, Kirin J Callinan, Guerre, Domekyo/Gonzales, No Art, Forces (VIC), Kitchen’s Floor (QLD), Bare Grillz, Horse Macgyver (VIC) and Blank Realm (QLD). In the coming weeks, we will be announcing another round of acts, so stay tuned for more!

Sound Summit is proud to present it’s first Festival-Within-A-Festival, “The Clubhouse” which will host the countries most exciting independent record labels and curators in a full day of back to back live performance. The Croation Club, with it’s European Beer, woodfired pizza oven and bowling green will host showcases from R.I.P Society, Spring Break, Bedroom Suck and Wormwood. Throughout the festival there will also be a series of showcases from Siberia Records, Dream Damage, Yes Please and Ladyz In Noyz, celebrating the best of DIY music from around the Australia.

Complimenting this live music juggernaut will be a series of panels exploring the ins-and-outs of the DIY experience, Music Industry 101 workshops to the more advanced Mastering Masterclass, Sound Summit will focus on sharing the knowledge and resources of practitioners and makers exploring new avenues for the production, release and touring experiences faced by independent bands in the brave new world of the 21st Century music industry.

Hands on workshops will be hosted by the modifying master Cubisteffects, who will lead two practical workshops – including a very exclusive Synth Building Class and a back to basics workshop for the less solder-advanced.
