Oh Mercy have been wooing Australian audiences in 2011 with an album full of effortless pop tunes, Great Barrier Grief. And now the band are poised to release yet another beautiful pop song with their new single Confessions, to be serviced to radio on June 27.
Confessions will be released digitally on July 15, exclusively to iTunes for 3 weeks. The digital b-side is the triple j Live At The Wireless recording of the Leonard Cohen song Memories from Oh Mercy's sold out hometown Melbourne show.
Oh Mercy's singer & songwriter, Alexander Gow, remembers how Confessions came to life in Mitchell Froom's recording studio: "Confessions was the first song to be recorded from the record. The idea was to start with something simple. And that it was, that it is - A simple pop song about the complexities of cross continental romance. Note the instrumental section with the strange bird sounds."
Inspiration to play the Leonard Cohen's song live, did not come directly from Cohen... Alexander explains: "Memories is a Leonard Cohen song, from his 'Death Of Ladies Man' album. Our version is based on The Blackeyed Susan's version. The Susan's are one of Australia's greatest bands and one of my favourites. Their version was sung by one of my heros David McComb singer/songwriter of The Triffids. Our effort was recorded at the Corner Hotel early 2011 on our Great Barrier Grief tour. "
The strength of Oh Mercy's pop sensibility is evident in their appeal to a wide audience of music lovers. In July, Alexander tours nationally along side Dan Sultan, before Oh Mercy head to the Splendour In The Grass festival & shows with UK buzz band The Vaccines. A quick trip back to America will be followed by A Day On The Green shows with Steely Dan before hitting the summer festival season.
Alexander Gow is fast becoming recognised as one of Australia's leading young songwriters, with a serious nod in his direction last night from Paul Kelly, inviting Alexander to perform alongside him on One More Tune at the 2011 APRA Awards.
