The Falls Music & Arts Festival is cooking this year, adding An Horse, CSS, John Butler Trio, Kimbra, Scratch Perverts and The Head & The Heart to an already massive line-up. True to form, the Lorne event sold-out when tickets went on sale this morning, and thousands of interstaters are now making plans to soak up The Falls’ fine tunes in Marion Bay, Tasmania. You can still get Marion Bay tickets from www.fallsfestival.com and with the festival still months away, plane and boat fares to Tasmania are super cheap. Everything you need to know is on the Travel to Falls page of www.fallsfestival.com.
Did you know?: last year 40% of Falls people crossed Bass Strait to go to the Falls in Tassie, 80% spent 6+ days having a holiday on the apple isle; 2/3 flew there, 1/3 sailed on the car ferry and everybody said things like this: “Those days at Marion bay were some of the best in my life!!” Cary, WA.
More about the latest additions to the line-up:
Indie duo hailing from Brisbane, An Horse has quietly become world beaters over the last few years. The enigmatic, stripped back stylings of Kate Cooper (singer/guitarist) and Damon Cox (drummer/singer) have propelled them into the public eye and onto stages around the world with the likes of Tegan & Sara, Death Cab for Cutie, Cage the Elephant, Silversun Pickups and The Big Pink. Their latest effort is Walls – a blissful record produced in Vancouver which proves that sometimes all you need in this topsy turvy musical world is a swag of brilliant songs and a good friend.
CSS have a reputation as one of the world's most exciting party bands. These cuter-than-thou South Americans peddle a brand of infectious indie-dance music that makes it impossible not to nod your head. Their single “Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” was a monster hit, taken from their debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy. The album title, in English, translates to Tired of Being Sexy. Maybe so, but with their latest album La Liberacion due out this month and its hit single ‘Hits Me Like A Rock’ in tow, CSS will no doubt gulp down a strong cup of coffee and be ready to party with us this summer.
Australia's roots kings John Butler Trio will be back in Australia and en route to Falls this summer. John Butler has spent the last decade or so carving his niche as one the most successful and influential roots musicians this country has ever seen. His last album, April Uprising, went straight in at number 1 on the ARIA charts – going on to become Butler's first ever Top 50 album on the American Billboard Charts. His discography, personality and aura speak for themselves - now it's time to see what John and his trio have cooked up for us this time around.
A rare and beatific talent, Kimbra is one of those artists that appears to arrive fully formed. Her single, “Settle Down” of earlier this year was a warning shot fired across Australian radio that a new face had arrived to join the likes of Sarah Blasko and Washington as one of our finest female talents. Her follow up single “Cameo Lover” won her the coveted Vanda & Young Songwriting Prize and she has also recently duetted with indie king Gotye on his hugely successful track “Somebody That I Used To Know”. The foundation has been laid then, for her debut album Vows to establish Kimbra as one of the country's rarest and brightest new diamonds.
Resident DJ's and kings of London's world famous Fabric club nights, Scratch Perverts are a collective that have become synonymous with Hip Hop and battle DJ'ing ever since their formation in 1996. The team of DJ Primecuts, Tony Vegas and Plus One have a huge reputation as one of the world's premier progressive DJ formations. They've collected countless DJ titles (including two consecutive World DMC Team crowns) and have taken their show to countless locations all over the planet. Known as unparalleled party starters, Scratch Perverts will be a rare treat this summer.
Placing their roots firmly at the feet of their forefathers of American song, it's hard to believe that Seattle's The Head & the Heart came together only 2 years ago. Hard to believe mostly because it sounds like they've been together forever. Their debut self-titled album is typified by resplendent torch songs like “Lost In My Mind” and “Down In The Valley” - songs so organic and joyous sounding they almost become timeless. Their fertile breeding ground has produced many great bands in the past and there is little doubt that The Head and the Heart will be carving their name alongside them sooner rather than later.
