ARIA Award winners The Idea of North announce new album and national tour

Last year they won an ARIA Best Jazz Album Award for their collaboration with James Morrison but now Australia’s leading a cappella vocal quartet, The Idea of North, are launching their national tour on the very day their album is released, Friday July 29.

Taking in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, The Idea of North’s is a show that needs to be seen and heard live to be believed.

In addition to performing the entire repertoire from their new album Extraordinary Tale, The Idea of North will be peppering their two hour show with a variety of musical genres and their ever dry, self-effacing wit. Hilarious parodies, beautiful ballads and intricate jazz standards are all staples of an Idea of North concert.

Their new album, Extraordinary Tale, is a collection of their much-loved and requested live repertoire, as yet previously unrecorded.

‘We’ve moved back to our core business on this album - a cappella (unaccompanied) singing and we are loving the result’, tenor Nick Begbie says.

‘Extraordinary Tale is an instrument-free zone,’ jokes the group’s alto Naomi Crellin who did many of the arrangements of hits like Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, Sting’s La Belle Dame Sans Regrets and The Beatles’ In My Life. ‘Our fans loved the previous album where we used a full band for all of the songs, but this time we’ve gone back to our unaccompanied concert repertoire and the songs that are requested time and time again by our fans.’

Soprano Sally Cameron agrees: ‘This is our eighth album and every one of them has had a degree of experimentation to it, so we wanted Extraordinary Tale to be like a new beginning as well.’

As always, bass Andrew Piper provided virtuosic mouth-percussion that gives the sense of a built-in rhythm section, but it’s in the gorgeous, rich vocal sound of the full ensemble where The Idea of North always shines. Tracks like Stevie Wonder’s Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer and Sinead O’Connor’s In This Heart are particularly moving.
