Album News Weekly: 1 April 2014

In This Issue: Again, it's an eclectic mix this week. Some big alternative music news - Pixies are back with a new one! Also a few new bands coming through, Byron band In Hearts Wake have something new coming out, The Murlocs are releasing a record, and Passenger is as well. Overseas, 50 Cent is still plugging away, releasing a new record in June. There's a heap of cool stuff in here, so have a read and give your ears a treat.


90’s alternative music fans rejoice: April 25 will see the release of Indie Cindy, the first studio LP since the release of 1991’s record Trompe Le Monde. It’ll be released on their own independent label, Pixiesmusic. There’s more: you can grab this sleek new release on Record Store Day, in a limited edition vinyl format. Get on it.

Instead Of Sleeping

Pittsburgh indie rockers Instead Of Sleeping have just announced the release of their debut record, Young Lungs, which will hit shelves on May 22. They’ve been picking up a bit of attention due to recent performances with the like of fun., so check them out.

50 Cent

Seriously, who doesn’t love a little bit of 50 Cent? The rapper recently let us know that his latest record, Animal Ambition, will drop on June 2. Now he’s just dropped the third single off the record, so have a listen below:


The Inertia label with Black Crow Records has just announced that Passenger (aka Mike Rosenberg), will release his new album, Whispers, on June 6. It’s his sixth studio record and follows the critically acclaimed All The Little Lights.


Having just signed with Remote Crontol/ Dot Dash, Brisbane rockers Velociraptor have just dropped a new single, Ramona. A new album is also reportedly in the works, but details are fairly scarce at this stage – all we know is that it’s scheduled for a release later this year. In the meantime, check out the single:

The Murlocs

Another one from the Remote Control Record, Victorian band The Murlocs have just announced their debut record Loopholes. The press release names their sound as a ‘pungent, distorted brand of soulful R&B’…so that’s promising. It’s out April 17. They’re also embarking on an East Coast tour in support of the record, starting a Brisbane album launch on the 17th.

In Hearts Wake

Yet another rad metal/hardcore outfit from Byron Bay, In Hearts Wake are releasing their second album, Earthwalker on May 2 via UNFD. Interestingly, they’ve also just partnered up with Carbon Neutral – a company that helps organisations and individuals reduce their carbon impact. Very Byron, and very cool. LA dance-punk three piece Liars have just announced an Australian/ New Zealand release date for their seventh (!!) full length record, Mess. It’s out Friday, April 11 via Create/Control & Mute. Check out the single here:


South African born, Berklee trained, and now the New York residing artist Sulene has just dropped her debut EP, Holding Words Back. It’s a crazy mash of genres – think Paramore, Radiohead and Muse. A really interesting listen, check out her stuff here:

Olympic Ayres

Sydney producer/duo Olympic Ayers have just shared the first single off their upcoming EP Leisureplex. They’ve previously supported World’s End Press and Van She amongst others – so they’re an act to keep an eye on.

The Hold Steady

They’re in their second decade of performing, Brooklyn act The Hold Steady have just announced the release of Teeth Dreams, out May 2 through Razor & Tie/ SONY. The punk legends have always been entertaining - last time we heard from them it was as a part of the Game Of Thrones soundtrack – ‘The Bear And The Maiden Fair”.
